SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That the following officers
of said County shall keep their respective offices in said
Town of Jasper, to wit; Chief Justice, District Clerk, County
Clerk, Sheriff; County Surveyor and Post Master of the
Post Office in the Town of Jasper.
SEC. 3. Be it further enacted, That this act take effect
from and after its passage.

'AN ACT
To amend the criminal laws of the Republic ot Texas.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representative
of the Republic of Texas in Congress assembled, That,
hereafter, the crimes of perjury, subornation of perjury, assaults
and batteries, with intent to kill and murder, or assaults,
with intent to commit a rape, may be prosecuted, at any time,
within five years, after the commission of said* offence, or
offences.
SEC. 2. Be it further enacted, That all laws in this Republic,
giving to the Chief Justices of the different counties
jurisdiction in cases of habeas Corpu, be, and the same are
hereby, repealed.
SEC. 3. Be it furt her enacted, That in the trials which
may hereafter take place in any of the District Courts of this
Republic, of a capital nature, theparty accused shall be entitled
to twelve peremptory challenges, and no more; except
there be more than one person on trial, in which event, then,
there shall be allowed to each person, on trial, as aforesaid,
eight peremptory challenges, and no a.ore.
SEC. 4. Be it further enacted, That in any criminal cases
which may, hereafter, be on trial, in any of the District Courts
of this Republic, and if it shall appear to the presiding Judge
thereof, alter sufficient efforts have been made, that from the
sparsness of the population, or other cause, a competent jury
