occasions. All students who play orchestral instruments by note
are urgently requested to bring them along.
Band.-The college band is a very essential musical organization.
Students who play band instruments are encouraged to
become members of this organization.
SCHOLARSHIPS, PRIZES AND HONORS
Two Scholarships are offered-one in the academy and one
in the college. In each case the scholarship goes to the student
making the highest average grade, deportment included. These
scholarships are good for free tuition the following session.
Bible.-President Baxter gives each year a handsome Bible
to the student who makes the best grade during the year, all work
included, in the Bible.
The Cox Prize in Extempore Speaking.-In memory of his
father, Van Buren Cox, and his mother, Julia Minerva Cox, and
to encourage young men in the study of the Bible and the study
and practice of the art of extempore speaking, Dean Jas. F. Cox
offers annually a prize of $25.00 in cash to be given to that
young man making the best showing in a contest to be held on
the night of April 2nd, each year.
Only regular students of the college who passed in at least
ten hours, and who were registered for at least twelve hours during
the winter term just closed are eligible. Each class in the college
(Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior) shall be entitled
to two representatives in the contest. Each class is to select its
own representatives in a contest to be held not later than the last
Monday in March. A winner of the prize is not eligible to enter
the contest again.
The judges for the contest shall be selected by the President
and Dean of the college and the head of the Public Speaking Department.As a second prize, F. B. Shepherd is offering a handsome
Bible. In the contest of 1929, Glenn Wallace, a senior, won the
first prize, his subject was-"The Conversion of Saul of Tarsus."
Homer Hailey speaking on the subject-"What Must I Do to Be
Saved," won the second prize. Forrest Waldrop, who had the
subject of "How Shall We Escape If We Neglect So Great Salvation,"
won third place.
Commentary.-McGarvey's New Commentary on Acts will
