DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES
All college students should begin foreign language coursesancient
or modern-at the earliest opportunity and complete the
language requirements as soon as possible. It is highly advisable
to continue the same language begun in high school
(see "Requirements for Graduation").
Less than three beginners' courses in the same language
will not be credited towards a degree.
Those who have one year in high school German or French
or Spanish should elect a 125 course in the same language; those
who have had two years, a 135 course; those who have had three
years, a 215 course.
Students applying for advanced credits from high schools
must have credits for two years of one modern language in excess
of all units required for unconditioned admission and must maintain
a grade of at least B in two courses above the ones in which
they receive advanced credit. They shall not receive more than
three hours credit in either course.
Selection of a Language
Students planning a medical or dental course-"pre-medical
students"-should take German or French, or both. Spanish will
not satisfy language requirements for entrance into medical colleges.
Those planning graduate work, especially candidates for
the Ph. D. degree, should take both German and French in their
undergraduate course.
To accomodate the course of study of those desiring both
German and French, courses in these languages alternate. In70
