LOCATION
Abilene, the county seat of Taylor County, situated near the geographical
center of Texas, is the largest and most important trade center in Central
Texas. A religious town, a school town, a town that seeks only good citizens,
it is one of the cleanest cities in Texas, physically and morally. Good families
are moving here especially for the benefits to be derived from Abilene
Christian College and its primary and secondary training schools.
PURPOSE
There are two outstanding reasons for the existence of Abilene Christian
College. First and foremost, Abilene Christian College proposes to emphasize
the study of the Bible as the inspired Word of the living God. It is its
purpose to get the great truths of the Bible into the hearts and minds of the
students who attend it, in order that their lives may be influenced, guided
and directed by its sacred teachings. Secondly, believing the spiritual growth
to be even more essential than thle mental or physical, the supporters of
Abilene Christian College seek to surround the student body with a genuinely
spiritual atmosphere. Therefore only men and women of sterling Christiancharacter
are permitted to teach here, and student life is kept as free from
worldliness and contaminating influences as possible. Young nmen and women
who are not amenable to such an environment are soon weeded out. Opportunities
for Christian service, and encouragement and direction in practical
activities in the Lord's work are supplied to such students as wish to use
them. The College is striving to maintain such a course of study in such
surroundings that those young people who yield themselves to the environment
and take the full four years course will develop into faithful, earnest
Christian men and wonimen, able to enjoy life and to render a valuable
senrice to God, to the church, and to humanity.
ACADEMIC STANDING
Abilene Christian College is graded "First Class" by the Texas Depart-.
ment of Education and by the Association of Texas Colleges. This places
the school in the first group of educational institutions of the state. Its
B. A. and B. S. degrees represent four years of standard college work. It is
permitted to give all certificates, both temporary and permanent, that colleges
are permitted to issue under the Texas law.
CAMPUS AND BUILDINGS
The new campus is in the center of a tract of 363 acres owned by the
College. On this campus, consisting of 35 acres, are seven fireproof buildings,
all completed in 1929, at a cost of approximately $450,000. The Administration
Building, the Edutcation Building, the Fine Arls and Auditorium Building,
and the Bennett Gymnasium comprise the working plant for the college. TheBoys'
Dormitory has accommodations for one hundred and fifty. The Girls'
Dormitory has accommodations for one hundred and fifty. Chambers
Hall, a three-story building, has boarding accommodations for four hundred
students, also rooms for light housekeeping on the third floor. All these
buildings are equipped with new, modern conveniences, insuring the best in
comfort and service to the students. In addition, the President's home just
across the campus and the Girls' Dormitory provide an ideal place for entertainments
and other gatherings for students and faculty.
THE COLLEGE LIBRARY
The college library contains 10,850 volumes accessibly shelved in steel
racks. The library is located on the east side of the Administration Building. It
is composed of one large reading room and two stack rooms. The reading
room contains the circulating desk, reserve shelves, magazine rack, reference
books, and a new 25 tray card catalogue. A smaller reading room is found
