316, 317, 318.-Appreciation and History of Music.
Primitive music; primitive instruments; origin of music. Ancient
and semi-civilized music with outlines of music in China, India,
Babylonia, Assyria, Israel, and Egypt. Music of the ancient Greeks
and Romans. Opera, oratorio, organ, violin, harpischord, and clavichord
through the eighteenth century. Music of the Romantic and
Modern schools and composers. Music of America, essays, and biographies
required throughout the course.
CER.TIFICATES
To secure a certificate a pupil must complete one year of college
work and two in Harmony, one in history of music and one in Composition
and Counterpoint.
ADVANCED WORK
More advanced courses will be given as a continuation of the work
outlined above to meet the requirements of the individual student.
ACCOMPANYING
The playing of accompaniments is an important function of every
pianist and is a form of ensemble work in which many pianists specialize.
Opportunities for practice in accompanying are afforded all
students of sufficient advancement.
VOICE

111, 112, 113.-First Year Voice.
Three scales in middle range. Simple songs of three, four, or five
notes, or such simple exercises as given by the teacher. Three octave
arpeggios in middle range. One vocalise by Concone or other
composer, but not more difficult than Concone 10 to 20. One simple
song in English.
131, 132, 133.-Second Year Voice.
Two major scales in extended range in slow and rapid tempo.
Two chromatic scales to the augmented fifth. Tvwo exercises on
intervals of the third. Exercises containing groups of three, four,
or five notes. Octaves, both forte and piano. Messa di voce, in
the middle range. Descending scales. Extended arpeggio. An
exercise by Concone or other composer more difficult than Concone
20. A recitative and aria from opera or oratorio.
151, 152, 153.-Third Year Voice.
Three scales in extended range. Three exercises on thirds, and
scales including groups of three and four notes on each tone of
the scale. Staccato exercises for soprano. Two chromatic scales
for all voices. One recitative and aria. One classical song. One
modern song according to the type of voice. Three exercises with
octaves, piano and forte. Prolonged messa di voce.
