DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
Requirement of nine hours in Mathematics for a degree
may be met by 300, 301, and 302. If the student
already has credit for Solid Geometry and Trigonometry,
another six hours must be taken.
Entrance credit in Solid Geometry and Trigonometry
will be counted as six hours provided that, (1) the credit
is in excess of those required for unconditional admission,
(2) a grade of at least B is made on two three-hour
courses in advance of Solid Geometry and Trigonometry.
This credit must be applied for not later than three
months after the student enters.
Students who make Mathematics their major should
make Science or Education their minor.
300.-Solid Geometry. Every term.
301.-Trigonometry. This course covers functions,
formulas, equations, logarithms, and the solution of triangles.
Every term.
302.-College Algebra. This course deals with a brief
review of high school algebra and the fundamentals of
college algebra. Every term.
303.-Introduction to Analytic Geometry. The things
stressed in this course are, cartesian co-ordinates, graphs
of equations, equation of the straight line, the circle,
other typical curves, and the transformation of co-ordinates.
Fall term.
321.-Analytic Geometry. This course reviews the
straight line and the circle, and takes up the study of
the parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola. Winter term.
322.-Advanced Algebra. This course goes further
into mathematical induction, the binomial theorem, functions,
probability, complex numbers, and the theory of
equations. Spring term.
351.-Theory of Equations. The topics studied in this
course are, complex numbers, the solution of the quadratic,
cubic, and quartic equations, graphs of equations,
theorems concerning the roots of equations, determinants,
and systems of linear equations. Fall term.
