Liberal arts colleges emphasize the importance of liberal education
in maintaining and preserving the great American freedoms.
Perhaps no generally accepted answer will ever be given to the
question "What is a liberal education?" But Abilene Christian College
believes that such an education must include a careful and thorough
training of the head, the hand, and the heart. It is in accord with the
statement of the late Dr. William Lyon Phelps:
Everyone who has a thorough knowledge of the Bible may
be called educated, and no other learning or culture, no matter
how exclusive or elegant, among Europeans or Americans, can
take its place. Western civilization is founded upon the Bible.
Our ideas, our wisdom, our philosophy, our literature, our art
and ideals come more from the Bible than from all other books
put together. ... I thoroughly believe in a university education
for both men and women; but I believe a knowledge of
the Bible without a college education is more valuable than a
college course without the Bible.
The principal reason, then, for the existence of Abilene Christian
College is to educate young men and women for abundant and responsible
living as Christians serving throughout the world.
