An excellent relationship exists between the Placement Office and
the businessmen of Abilene. Too, each year scores of employers from
throughout the United States conduct formal recruitment interviews
on the campus.
TRAINING FOR VETERANS
The GI Bill provides financial aid to eligible veterans with service
after Korea who want to attend school or college.
He may have served any place in the world-in the United States
or abroad-and not necessarily in Korea.
Rates for veterans in full-time training in schools and colleges are
$110 a month, if they have no dependents; $135 if they have one
dependent; and $160 if they have more than one dependent. Those in
training less than full-time will receive lower monthly rates.
In order to receive this training at Abilene Christian College, the
veteran must make application to the Veterans Administration, Lubbock,
Texas. Application forms may be secured from any Veterans
Administration office.
AWARDS
The S. N. Allen Essay Contest-S. N. Allen, long-time member of
the Board of Trustees of Abilene Christian College, provided funds for
a $50 yearly first prize to the student writing the best essay on some
phase of the subject, "The Goodness of God." Mr. Hollis Manly offers
a second prize of $25 and J. W. Roberts a third prize of $15. The
contest is open to any full-time undergraduate student in the college.
The Cox Prize in Extempore Speaking-In memory of his father,
Van Buren Cox, his mother, Julia Minerva Cox, James F. Cox, Sr.,
former president and dean of Aibilene Christian College, has since 1928
offered a medal to the young man winning an extempore speaking
contest held in April. Dr. James F. Cox, Jr., has asked Ito continue the
contest by providing a first prize of $50 each year. The subjects must
be chosen from the Bible. As second prize F. B. Shepherd offers a
Bible. A third prize is offered by Paul Southeirn.
Art Awards.-Each year at the annual student exhibition, awards
will be made for outstanding work in oil, water color, charcoal, pencil,
and pen and ink.
The Dean's Award.-Each year Dean Walter H. Adams gives a
medal to that member of the graduating class who, in the judgment
of a committee of the faculty, has best taken advantage of the oplportunities
afforded him here.30
