A survey of the more prominent theoretical approaches to the education of
the retarded. Special emphasis is placed on the practical application of various
methodologies.
5381. Curriculum for the Mentally Retarded.
The adaptation of usual and special methods for teaching the retarded. A
knowledge of effective methods, techniques, and materials as well as an understanding
of curricula for the normal child is presupposed. Prerequisites: Ed.-Psy.
4373, Ed.-Psy. 4376, Ed.-Psy. 4377 and basic work in elementary education.
5382. Abnormal Psychology.
An analysis of the types of psychological abnormalities, their etiologies and
accepted methods of treatment. Prerequisite: 12 hours in psychology.
5385. Client-Centered Counseling.
Techniques of counseling based on the client-centered relationship. Prerequisite:
Consent of professor.
5387. Personality Theories.
The major theories, dynamics, and assessment of personality. Prerequisite: 15
hours of psychology.
5391. Group Dynamics.
The principles and operations underlying group actions and interactions. Prerequisite:
Consent of professor.
5393. History, Theories and Systems.
The historic and systematic development of psychology as a science, and the
theoretical bases for the various areas of psychology. Prerequisite: Psychology
major and 15 hours of psychology.
5398. Psychology of Religion.
An investigation of the relationship of psychological and emotional factors relating
to religious experience and thought, on both an individual and a group basis.
6311. General Research Methods.
An introduction to research methods and their application to research problems.
Prerequisites: Psychology 3356 or 3368 or equivalent.
6340. Individual Intelligence Testing.
In addition to the academic work, the student will be required to administer
a minimum number of individual intelligence tests in a realistic situation under
supervision. Prerequisites: 18 hours of psychology including 3368 and 3356,
and consent of professor.
6350. Introduction to Projective Techniques.
An introduction to projective theory and a survey of the more widely used
projective instruments; their characteristics, uses, and limitations. Prerequisites:
Psychology 3368 and 5387, or their equivalents, and consent of professor.
6357. Intermediate Statistics.
An introduction to such topics as statistical inferences, sampling techniques,
hypothesis testing, design of experiments, analysis of variance, special correlation
methods, multiple prediction, and errors of measurement. Prerequisite: Psychology
3356 or its equivalent.
6360. Introduction to Clinical Psychology.
A basic course toward the pre-clinical area. An overview of functions, methods,
and problems of contemporary clinical psychology, together with presentations
of illustrative case studies.
6390. Practicum in Counseling.
Brings the student into a face-to-face relationship with a client under the supervision
of the course instructor. Audio and visual devices will be used for
supervision and observation by other students. (Note: 50 clock hours of counseling
and allied supervision will constitute one semester hour.)
6392. Practicum in Pre-Clinical Psychology.
(Prerequisites: Psychology 3368, 6340, and 6360.) Supervised practice in the
use of psychological diagnostic-clinical techniques. Focus will be on one of
three areas during a given semester. Course may be repeated for credit, with
consent of instructor, if taken in one of the remaining areas. Areas: (1) Group
psychometrics: (2) Individual intelligence testing; (3) Projective techniques (additional
prerequisite for projective techniques: Psychology 6350). A minimum of
50 clock hours of practicum experience is required for each semester hour.
