Departmental Requirements
Except with prior approval by the Chairman of the Department
of Education, those who complete their degree
program at Abilene Christian University must take all of
their professional education courses in residence at the
university.
Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA in order to do their student
teaching. Student teaching requires a minimum of
twelve weeks of all-day student teaching. The only exception
is Vocational Home Economics Education, which requires
eight weeks of student teaching. Available
endorsements are described below.
Special Note
Senate Bill 994, passed by the Texas legislature in 1987,
mandated changes in teacher education programs. As
soon as these changes are clarified by the Texas Education
Agency, they will be explained and implemented by the
Department of Education.
Elementary Education Requirements
Departmental requirements for the BSEd in Elementary
Education are as follows:
1. Required professional courses, 30 hrs.: EDUC 210,
311, 321, 341, 565, 569, 570, 431, 492. The upper
division courses are to be taken during the junior
and senior years.
2. Other required courses, 27 hrs.: CHEM 203; POLS
226; EDUC 563, 550; ENGL 550; GEOG 235;
MATH 117; MUSE 330; PE 233; ART 587. (Some
of these requirements overlap with requirements in
some areas of specialization; MUSE 332 may be substituted
for MUSE 330 by students who select a
Music specialization, item 10 below.)
3. COMS 286 is required in place of COMS 111 to fulfill
speech requirement in General Education.
4. Specialization in one of the areas listed below, 18-24
hrs.
Requirements for available areas of specialization for
Elementary Education majors are as follows:
1. Required courses for specialization in Art, 21 hrs.:
ART 101, 103, 104, 105, 587, 333, 361.
2. Required courses for specialization in Bilingual
Education, 24 hrs.: ENGL 569, 560; FLSP 490 or
ENGL 549; SOCI 222 or 342; HIST 580 or 590 or
586; ENGL 443 or 528; and six hours chosen from
FLSP 351, 385, 388.
3. Required courses for specialization in Biology, 20 hrs.:
BIOL 112, 113; and two from the following: BIOL
214, 353, 570, 592 with lab.
4. Required courses for specialization in English, 18 hrs.:
ENGL 111, 112, 221, 560, 551; and three hours
chosen from ENGL 222, 223, 224, 225, 226. (Four of
these courses, or 12 hours, overlap with GeneralEducation requirements.)
5. Required courses for specialization in French, 23 hrs.:
FLFR 111, 112, 221, 222; and nine hours chosen
from FLFR 351, 352, 385, 386, 581, 582, 583, 584.
6. Required courses for specialization in German, 23 hrs.:
FLGE 111, 112, 221, 222, 385, 386; and one advanced
elective in German.
7. Required courses for specialization in Health, 18 hrs.:
HED 112, 241, 252, 322, 324, 505.
8. Required courses for specialization in History, 18 hrs.:
HIST 117, 118, 580; and nine hours of advanced
electives in history.
9. Required courses for specialization in Mathematics, 19
hrs.: MATH 118, 121, 124, 309, 310, 512.
10. Required courses for specialization in Music, 23 hrs.:
MUST 111, 112, 131, 132; MUSM 121 or 122;
MUSM 431, 432; MUSE 334; two hours of piano (or
pass the Piano Barrier); two hours of performing
courses.
11. Required courses for specialization in Physical Education,
19 hrs.: PE 121, 122, 244, 245, 241, 334, 598,
570, 590.
12. Required courses for specialization in Reading, 18
hrs.: EDUC 160, 362, 590, 380, 550, 577.
13. Required courses for specialization in Social Studies,
24 hrs.: HIST 117, 118, 580; GEOG 235, 354; POLS
381; ECON 260, 261.
14. Required courses for specialization in Spanish, 23
hrs.: FLSP 111, 112, 221, 222, 351, 352; plus three
hours chosen from FLSP 385, 386, 480, 484, 482, 483.
