29-32Departmental Requirements for Food, Nutrition, and
Dietetics
Since human nutrition and food service are the major concerns
of most graduates of this program, they should enjoy
working both with food and people. They should also
have an aptitude for chemistry and the biological sciences.
Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics graduates are employed by
hospitals, nursing homes and extended care facilities, daycare
centers, colleges, universities, public schools, and
commercial food services. They also find career opportunities
in the food science field and in product development
and testing, in community nutrition programs, and in
research. This program meets the American Dietetic Association
Plan IV requirements for General Dietetics.
Graduates may apply for an American Dietetic Association
approved internship. Those who successfully complete
the approved internship, meet all other
requirements, and pass the national registration examination
become Registered Dietitians. Graduate degrees are
desirable for advancement in many areas of this field.
Employment opportunities are good.
Departmental requirements for the BS in Food, Nutrition,
and Dietetics are as follows:Departmental Requirements for General Home
Economics
A degree in General Home Economics provides an excellent
background for many entry-level positions in business
and industry, fulltime homemaking, or graduate work in
home economics/family studies. General Home
Economics majors who select their electives carefully enhance
their opportunities for these jobs. Consult your advisor
for recommended elective concentrations in art,
business, mass communications, government, human
development, family studies, and journalism. Graduates in
General Home Economics are often employed in positions
calling only for unspecified college degrees. This degree
does not meet teacher certification requirements for any
field.
Departmental requirements for the BS in General Home
Economics are as follows:
1. Required courses in Home Economics/Family Studies,
47 hrs.: HEFS 100, 401, 211, 212, 313, 221, 222, 323,
331, 332, 433, 241, 344, 250, 551, 552, and three additional
hours advanced HEFS.*These courses are offered every other year. Check departmental course listings for semesters.
