COOPERATIVE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
DEGREE
The university offers several pre-professional programs
whereby students may attend ACU from one to four
years and then transfer to a professional school to
complete a degree in such health professions as
medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry,
pharmacy, medical technology, nursing, physical therapy,
respiratory therapy, and dental hygiene. Students are
encouraged to obtain literature from their chosen professional
school to ensure that they satisfy the professional
school's entrance requirements.
One special kind of pre-professional program is the
cooperative degree program, in which ACU awards the
bachelor's degree to certain qualified students who have
satisfactorily completed three years of prescribed work at
ACU (a minimum of 104 hours) plus one year at a recognized
professional school. The university offers the
cooperative BS in medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary
medicine, and medical technology. Students in the
cooperative degree program are advised by the Chairman
of the Advisory Committee for the Health Professions.

Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 16.
General Education Requirements
General Education requirements for the BS are listed on
page 19. A cooperative BS degree requires no foreign
language and only 12 hours of Bible.
Departmental Requirements
Departmental requirements for the cooperative BS in
Biology are as follows:
1. Required biology courses, 18 hrs.: BIOL 111, 112,
and 113 plus 6 hours of upper-division electives.
Students in pre-medical technology must take BIOL
353 and 554; students in pre-veterinary medicine
must take BIOL 551; BIOL 312 is highly recommended
for all pre-professional programs.
2. Required chemistry courses, 19 hrs.: CHEM 131, 132,
133, 134, 221, 222, 323, and 324 plus three hours of
upper-division electives.
3. Required physics courses, 8 hrs.: PHYS 110 and 112.
4. Mathematics, 3 hrs.: MATH 124 or 185. MATH 185
is required for students in pre-medicine and preveterinary
medicine and is recommended for predentistry
students.General Electives
To obtain a total of 104 credit hours, the student working
on a cooperative degree in health sciences must take
13 hours of general electives. Courses in psychology,
sociology, economics, and government are recommended.
Pre-vet students must take three hours of animal nutrition
and six hours of government.

Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 16.
General Education Requirements
General Education requirements for the BA are listed on
page 19.
Departmental Requirements
Departmental requirements for the BA in Biology are as
follows:
1. Required biology courses, 34 hrs.: BIOL 111, 112,
and 113 plus 22 hours of upper-division electives.
2. Required chemistry courses, 8 hrs.: CHEM 131, 132,
133, and 134; or CHEM 111, 112, 113, and 114.
3. Course concentration in any single department, 12
hrs. Required chemistry courses and General Education
courses do not count toward this requirement.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, the student working
on a BA in Biology must take 28 hours of general
electives. Arrange your electives to ensure 33 semester
hours of advanced work.
