Special Requirements
Students planning to enter the teaching profession should apply
for entry into the Teacher Education program during their junior year
after passing all parts of the Pre-professional Skills Test. Junior and
senior transfer students should apply for admission to the Teacher
Education program as soon as they have passed the test. Application
is made in the office of the Department of Education in Chambers Hall.
Admission to the teacher education program is granted to students
who meet the following standards:
a. Health and physical clearance.
b. Approval of the Dean of Students.
c. Grade-point average of 2.25 or above.
d. A minimum of 60 accumulated hours.
e. A "C" average on the required Freshman and Sophomore English
courses.
f. Recommendation from three Abilene Christian University faculty
members.
g. A passing score on all three sections of the Pre-Professional
Skills Test. (This examination was selected by the Commission on
Standards for the Teaching Profession with approval of the State
Board of Education. The required score has been established by
the State Board. This test should be taken by Freshman and
Sophomore students who expect to take Education courses in the
Junior and Senior years.)
h. Students graduating in May 1986 or thereafter who wish Texas
teacher certification must pass the Teacher Certificaton Tests
mandated by Senate Bill 50. These tests will be designed to
meet Texas Education Agency specifications. Pass-fail scores
will be determined at the state level. Information regarding these
tests will be available through the Department of Education in
Chambers Hall.
i. Approval of Screening Committee in teacher education. (The
student should understand that he/she must comply with the
standards outlined in the Student Handbook.)
Students who complete programs at Abilene Christian University must
take all Education courses in residence at the university, except with
prior approval by the Chairman of the Departments concerned.
During the spring of 1984 new standards for teacher certification
in Texas were adopted by the State Board of Education.
During the 1984-85 school year, all teacher education institutions
in Texas revised their curricula in Education as well as in all
programs leading to initial certification. At the time this catalog
went to press, the revised curriculum for Vocational Home Economics
Education had not been approved and adopted by the
necessary local and state review committees. These revisions
were completed in time to become effective with the fall semester,
1985.
Transition into the revised programs will occur during the
1985-86 school year. Information regarding the revised program
will be available from advisors in the Department of Home Economics/Family
Studies. Students are responsible for obtaining
updated information for degrees in Home Economics Education
as well as teacher certification requirements. Advisors can inform
students as to which new courses are approximately equivalent to
designated courses in this catalog.
Students should expect to take additional hours of course
work in Education to comply with new standards. Student teaching
during the 1985-86 school year will be all-day only.
