Exercise, Science and Health 75
bowling lanes are located in the nearby McGlothlin
Campus Center. Students have access to the department's
Human Performance Laboratory where an analysis of body
composition, cardiovascular function, blood chemistry,
respiratory function, muscular strength, and flexibility can
be obtained. Computer assisted nutrition and stress
profiles and personal evaluations are also available through
the Human Performance Laboratory.
Students selecting exercise science or health as their course
of study will be preparing to teach, coach, become involved
in community health programs, or work in health and
wellness in a corporate, hospital or private setting. The
nature of these occupations requires professionals who
enjoy working with people.
Several options are available for those desiring teacher
certification in exercise science and health. Coordination
with the Department of Education is required. A student
may choose a BS in the following:
* Exercise and Sport Science (Physical Education
All-Level)
* Interdisciplinary Studies with a teaching field in
Exercise Science and another teaching field
* Health and another teaching field
* Exercise Science and Health

Departmental courses are indicated by one of two prefixes
- HED and EXSC.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREES
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 16.
General Education Requirements
General education requirements (University Core and
Degree Core requirements) for the BS are listed on
pp. 21-22. The requirements listed below will specify
general education courses as required.
EXERCISE AND SPORT SCIENCE
(for teacher certification)
This degree leads to certification to teach physical
education in grades kindergarten through high school.
The general education requirements for exercise science
activity courses are fulfilled in the major below. See the
Department of Education section of this catalog
for two-field certification.
Specific University Core requirements are:
English: ENGL 111, 221.
History: HIST 221.
Science: BIOL 291/293, 292/294.Specific BS Degree Core requirements are:
English: ENGL 112.
Social sciences: HIST 222, POLS 226, and SOCI 342.
Departmental Requirements:
Exercise and Sport Science
Departmental requirements for the BS in exercise and sport
science (for teacher certification) are as follows:
1. Exercise science, 37 hours: EXSC 110, 121, 122, 232,
241, 244, 245, 333, 334, 361, 362, 464, 465, 470,
476, 490, 498, and 3 hours chosen from EXSC 471,
491; HED 324, 405; PSYC 342.
Certification Requirements
1. Technology, 2-3 hours: TECH 205, 210.
2. Reading, 3 hours: READ 322.
3. Professional education, 18 hours: EDUC 311, 321,
412, 432, 488, and 498.
4. Special education, 1 hour: SPED 478.
5. English, 3 hours: ENGL 222 (to complete sequence
taken in the University Core).
6. Minimum GPA in 12 hours of freshman and
sophomore English: 2.00.
7. Pass all three sections of the TASP.
8. Be admitted to the teacher certification program
(prerequisite to EDUC courses).
9. Pass all appropriate sections of the ExCET.
10. Minimum cumulative GPA: 2.50.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, the student seeking
the BS in exercise and sport science for teacher certification
may need 11 hours of general electives.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION (non-teaching)
This is a non-teaching degree; the teaching degree is listed
as exercise and sport science. The general education
requirements for exercise science activity courses are
fulfilled in the major below.

Physical Education (non-teaching)
Departmental requirements for the BS in physical
education (non-teaching) are as follows:
1. Exercise science, 13 hours: EXSC 110, 121, 122, 232,
241, 244, 245, and EXSC 333. (EXSC 121, 122, 244,
and 245 satisfy the general education EXSC
requirement.)
2. Health, 9 hours, chosen from the following: HED 111,
324, 405, and 410.
3. Exercise science, 15 hours, chosen from the following:
EXSC 361, 362, 442, 470, 471, 476, 490, 491, and
498.
