with a Bachelor of Science degree include: teaching in junior and
senior high school, in community colleges, and in adult and continuing
education programs; promotion of consumer products; employment.as
an extension home economist; or as a home economist in business or
industry. In view of present trends in education, Home Economics
Education majors are encouraged to broaden their employment options
by completing requirements in a second teaching field, or the teaching
endorsement requirements for teaching Kindergarten, Driver's Education,
Special Education of the Mentally Retarded, or English as a Second
Language. Home Economists with bilingual ability are in demand.
Special Requirements
Students planning to enter the teaching profession should make
application for entry into the Teacher Education program during their
junior year when the first Education course is taken. Junior and senior
transfer students should apply for admission to the Teacher Education
program during their first semester at Abilene Christian University. This
is done in the office of the Department of Education in Chambers Hall.
Unconditional admission to the teacher education program is granted
to students who meet the following standards:
a. Health and physical clearance.
b. Approval of the Dean of Students.
c. Grade-point average of 2.25 or above.
d. A minimum of 60 accumulated hours.
e. A "C" average on the required Freshman and Sophomore English
courses.
f. Recommendation from three Abilene Christian University faculty
members.
g. A passing score on all three sections of the Pre-Professional
Skills Test. (This examination was selected by the Commission on
Standards for the Teaching Profession with approval of the State
Board of Education. The required score has been established by
the State Board. This test should be taken by Freshman and
Sophomore students who expect to take Education courses in the
Junior and Senior years.)
h. Approval of Screening Committee in teacher education. (The
student should understand that he/she must comply with the
standards outlined in the Student Handbook.)
Students who complete programs at Abilene Christian University must
take Education courses in residence at the university, except with prior
approval by the Chairman of the Departments concerned.
