Teacher education at Abilene Christian University has long been
considered a significant component of the university. When seniorcollege
status was attained in 1919 under President Sewell, the college
was preparing teachers. The goal of the Department of Education is to
prepare students who will be professionally competent to teach in
elementary and secondary schools. A capable faculty provides a rich
background of public school professional experience and academic
preparation.
The teacher education program has been approved by the Texas
Education Agency at the state level and by the National Council for
the Accreditation of Teacher Education at the national level. The
university is a member of the American Association of Colleges for
Teacher Education and the Texas Association of Colleges for Teacher
Education.
Almost one-fifth of ACU graduates are recommended for teacher
certification in Texas. Public and private school systems from a wide
geographic area regularly send representatives to the campus to
recruit teachers, and the university's Placement Office actively assists
graduates in finding positions.h. After May 1, 1984, students must make a passing score on all
sections of the Pre-Professional Skills Test. (This examination
was selected by the Commission on Standards for the
Teaching Profession with approval of the State Board of
Education. A minimum required score will be established by
the State Board.)

in residence at the university, except with prior approval by the
