3336. Parenting and Family Skills (3-0) [Spring]
Principles of effective parenting. Family leadership and utilization of
family resources. Emphasis upon skills needed to cope with various
patterns of cultural and family lifestyles, with roles of the family and
society; and with parent/child interactions through a life-span approach.
3340. Field Experience [Fall]
Supervised work experience in a business or agency appropriate to the
student's area of specialization. Minimum of 160 clock hours work experience
in the field required. Prerequisites: Junior standing; BA 3330,
3340; HE 1310 and/or concurrent enrollment in HE 3344 for fashion
merchandising majors; completion of 12 semester credits in Home Economics
for other students; permission of department chairman and
acceptance of the student enrolling in Field Experience by a business or
agency.

Principles of finance and utilization of time and energy resources for the
family. Includes spending plans, credit, savings, insurance, housing,
taxes, and investments.

Fashion innovation and marketing processes applied to clothing, accessories,
and household textiles.
3351. Nutrition (3-0) [Spring]
Study of the nutrients, nutritive values of common food materials, and the
essentials of an adequate diet for persons of different ages. Prerequisite:
Chem. 1311-1312, or 1321-1322 and 1121-1122.
3352. Consumer Aspects of Clothing (3-0) [Spring, even-numbered
years)
Impact of economic, social, and psychological forces on clothing needs
of family members.
3354. Clothing Design and Construction* (2-4) [Spring]
Interrelated factors in fitting, flat pattern design, and clothing construction.
Prerequisite: 1326 or exemption approved by department chairman.
3366. Household Equipment and Demonstration Techniques (3-0)
[Fall, Spring]
Selection, operation and care of appliances and equipment in the home;
lighting; and conservation of resources. Includes demonstration techniques.3387. Methods of Teaching Home Economics (3-0) [Spring]
Organization and implementation of vocational home economics programs.
Emphasis on goals, methods, content, resource materials, and
evaluation devices; guided observation of classes and programs. Prerequisite:
Junior standing.
3390. Family Relations (3-0) [Fall, Spring]
The family in contemporary society, with emphasis on its establishment
and maintenance, relationships, and environmental influences.
4100. Guided Study (Offered on demand)
4102. Home Economics Seminar [Spring]
Professional aspects of employment; relationship of the total curriculum
to professional use; current trends and issues in home economics. Prerequisite:
Second semester junior standing. Required of all majors in
department.
4273. Home Management (2-0) [Fall, Spring]
Identification of values and goals in relation to management by objective.
Prerequisites: Junior standing and 2322, 3341, 3390. Home Economics
Education and General Home Economics majors must take 4274 concurrently.4274. Home Management Residence-Laboratory [Fall, Spring]
Integration and application of management principles of a home economics
subject matter in a group living situation. Married students complete
laboratory requirements in their home. Reservations for single
student residence-laboratory should be scheduled with the department
chairman not later than the first semester of the junior year. Prerequisites:
Junior standing and 2322, 3341, 3390. Must be taken concurrently
with 4273. Credit is not granted without 4273.
4346. The Family and the Community (3-0) [Fall]
Consideration of community institutions and resources in the community
as they affect the well-being of children and families. Experiences and
information needed to work effectively with these institutions and
resources. Prerequisites: Junior standing; at least 3 semester credits in
courses related to family studies or consent of instructor.
4353. Nutrition in Disease (3-0) [Fall, odd-numbered years]
Physiology of nutrition in disease and the nutritional therapy of patients.
Prerequisites: Chemistry 2431 and Biology 2392, 2192 or permission of
instructor.
4355. Food Service Systems Management (2-4) [Fall, even-numbered
years]
Study of problems encountered in food service management including
quantity food preparation and purchasing, institutional organization,
supervision, and financial control. Minimum of 40 hours experience in
food service required; involves on-the-job experience. Prerequisites:
1300, 2322; Business Administration 3330.4364. Tailoring* (2-4) [Fall, odd-numbered years]
Custom and dressmaker tailoring techniques. Construction of a coat or
suit. Prerequisites: 3354 or consent of instructor.4365. Experimental Problems in Foods* (2-4) [Fall, even-numbered
years]
Study of the effects of variants upon food quality. Laboratory experiments
and introduction to food research techniques. Prerequisites: HE
1300; Chemistry 1311-1312, or 1321-1322 and 1121-1122.
4378. Guidance in Early Childhood (3-0) [Fall, all semester; Spring,
one-half semester daily]
Fundamental principles underlying behavior and methods of working
with young children. Minimum of 30 hours nursery school participation
required. Prerequisite: 2333; prerequisite waived for majors from other
departments.
4388. Advanced Methods of Teaching Home Economics (3-0) [Fall]
Equips students with knowledge and skills needed to teach in junior high
school, senior high school, and adult home economics programs, manage
a home economics department, and to assume other school and
community responsibilities. Prerequisite: 3387.
4694. Student Teaching in Home Economics [Fall, Spring]
A minimum of 240 clock hours of directed teaching, observation, and
related activities. Prerequisites: Senior standing; 3387, 4388; overall GPA
