General Departmental Requirement
Majors in family and consumer sciences are required to
make a C or better in all courses required for their major.
This includes general education requirements that are
included as a part of the major.
Courses marked with asterisk (*) in the FCS degree
requirements below are offered every other year.

Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 15.
General Education Requirements
General Education requirements (University Core and
Degree Core requirements) for the BS degree are listed on
pp. 21-22. Departmental majors have some special requirements
in the University Core and in the BS Degree Core.
Special requirements in the University Core are as follows:
Fashion merchandising: BIOL 120, CHEM 101.
Food, nutrition, dietetics: Science satisfied in the
supplement for the major.
General family and consumer science: BIOL 120,
CHEM 101, HIST 221 or 222.
Human development/family studies: BIOL 120,
CHEM 101.
Interior design: BIOL 120, CHEM 101, HIST 117.
Vocational home economics education: BIBM 390,
BIOL 203, CHEM 101, HIST 221, literature in
English.
Special requirements in the BS Degree Core are as follows:
Fashion merchandising: ECON 260, PSYC 120.
Food, nutrition, dietetics: POLS 226 or 226, PSYC
311.
Human development/family studies: PSYC 120, 232;
SOCI 111.
Interior design: ART 101, HIST 118.
Vocational home economics education: HIST 222,
POLS 226, SOCI 342.
Fashion Merchandising
Employment opportunities in fashion merchandising
include buying, selling, managing, fashion coordination,
fashion promotion, and fashion consulting. Prospective
employers include retail stores; advertising agencies;
fashion market centers; and fabric, pattern, and notions
companies as well as textile and apparel manufacturers. To
be successful in this challenging, competitive, anddemanding field, one must understand fashion and
marketing strategies, possess some mathematical aptitude,
be energetic, and work well with people. Career
opportunities are expected to remain stable or increase
throughout the remainder of this decade.
Departmental Requirements:
Fashion Merchandising
Departmental requirements for the BS in fashion
merchandising are as follows:
1. Required courses in family and consumer sciences, 35
hrs.: FCS 100, 401, 403; 211*, 212*; 313, 314*; 221
or 222; 241, 332*, 344; 250 or 452, and 3 additional
hrs. advanced FCS.
2. Required courses in business administration, 24 hrs.:
ACCT 210; ECON 260 (fulfills 3 hrs. of Degree Core
behavioral science requirement), 261; BLAW 363;
MGMT 330; MKTG 340, 344, 345.
3. Other required courses, 6 hrs.: ART 105; CS 105.
4. Electives, including deficiency requirements in science
and foreign language, 10 hrs.
Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics
The scope of food, nutrition and dietetics is broad.
A strong aptitude for chemistry and the biological sciences
are necessary for completion of this degree. In defining the
nutrition goals for the nation, the American Dietetic
Association (ADA) recommended that "virtually all routine
health contacts with health professionals should include
some elements of nutrition education and nutrition
counseling."
According to the Department of Labor Statistics, the
dietetics profession will grow above all averages of other
professions through the year 2000. Dietitians and
nutritionalists are employed in health care (acute care
hospitals, medical centers, and nursing homes); others
work in commercial business and industry, school feeding,
community and public health nutrition programs; wellness
centers, day-care centers; or are self-employed in private
practice. They also find career opportunities in food
science, education, marketing, and product development,
as well as research.
This general dietetics program is currently granted
approval status by the American Dietetic Association
Council on Education Division of Education
Accreditation/Approval, a specialized body recognized by
the Council on Post-secondary Accreditation and the
United States Department of Education.
Graduates of this program who are verified by the
program director may apply for dietetic internships or
pre-professional practice programs to establish eligibility
for active membership in the American Dietetic Association
and/or to write the registration examination to become a
Registered Dietitian. In order to be competitive for AP4
