86 Foreign Languages
Teacher Certification
In order to certify, the student must meet all requirements
for the BA in the language chosen and all requirements for
teacher certification and a second field as specified in the
Department of Education section of this catalog.
Minor in Foreign Language
A minor in French, German, or Spanish may be added to
other degrees. A foreign language minor requires 18 hours
as follows:
1. Elementary proficiency in French, German or
Spanish.
2. Intermediate language courses, 6 hrs (FL_221, 222,
or equivalent).
3. Advanced-level language courses, 12 hrs.: FLFR,
FLGE, or FLSP.

Arabic
FLAR 111 Elementary Arabic I (3-1-3), fall. Introduction to Arabic
language and culture. Emphasis is on oral communication skills.
Prerequisite: E-ACT English, 19 or above; GENS 121; or approval by
department. Lab fee: $25.
FLAR 112 Elementary Arabic II (3-1-3), spring. A continuation of
FLAR 111. Prerequisite: FLAR 111 or equivalent. Lab fee: $25.
FLAR 221 Intermediate Arabic I (3-0-3), fall. Further study of basic
grammar with greater emphasis on conversation and reading.
Prerequisite FLAR 112 or equivalent.
FLAR 222 Intermediate Arabic II (3-0-3), spring. A continuation of
FLAR 221. Prerequisite: FLAR 221 or equivalent.
FLAR 400 Guided Study (3-0-3),* on demand.
Chinese
FLCH 111 Elementary Chinese I (3-1-3), fall on demand.
Introduction to Mandarin Chinese. Emphasis on oral communication
skills. Prerequisite: E-ACT English, 19 or above; GENS 121; or approval
by department. Lab fee: $25.
FLCH 112 Elementary Chinese I (3-1-3), spring on demand.
A continuation of FLCH 111. Prerequisite: FLCH 111 or equivalent.

years. A survey of life in contemporary France with emphasis on values,
attitudes, institutions, and current problems. Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or
equivalent.
FLFR 385 French Grammar and Phonetics (3-0-3), fall, odd years.
A thorough review of grammar and an introduction to French phonetics
and phonemics. Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.
FLFR 386 French Composition and Conversation (3-0-3), spring,
even years. Prose composition with attention to the acquisition of useful,
everyday vocabulary. Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.

FLFR 481 Medieval and Renaissance French Literature (3-0-3),
fall, odd years. A survey of Medieval and Renaissance French literature in
modem French translation. Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.

A general survey of seventeenth and eighteenth century French literature.
Prerequisite: FLFR 222 or equivalent.
FLFR 483 Nineteenth Century French Literature (3-0-3), fall, even
years. A general survey of nineteenth century French literature.

FLGE 351 Contemporary German Culture through Conversation
I (3-0-3), fall, even years. Stories with contemporary thematic content
are read and discussed extensively to give systematic practice in using the
idioms and important vocabulary of spoken German. Prerequisite: FLGE
222 or equivalent.
FLGE 352 Contemporary German Culture through Conversation
II (3-0-3), spring, odd years. Continues the techniques of FLGE 351.
Self-expression on broader cultural areas of modern German life is
encouraged. Prerequisite: FLGE 222 or equivalent.
FLGE 385 German Grammar and Composition I (3-0-3), fall, odd
years. Emphasis on the rules and techniques necessary for writing correct,
idiomatic German compositions. Prerequisite: FLGE 222 or equivalent.
FLGE 386 German Grammar and Composition II (3-0-3), spring,
even years. More stress on style through analysis of contemporary texts
and practice in free composition. Prerequisite: FLGE 222 or equivalent.
