General Degree Requirements
1. WORK REQUIRED
a. The various degree and departmental requirements can be found under the
appropriate departmental section of this catalog.
b. A minimum of 60 semester hours of graduate work is required for two master's
degrees.
c. Of the hours required, at least one-half must be in 6000-level courses (courses
open to graduate students only).
2. ADMISSION TO CANDIDACY
a. A candidacy application is prepared by the student and is signed by both the
student and the advisor, and submitted to the Dean of the Graduate School for
approval. Responsibility for applying for candidacy at the proper time rests with the
student. Enrollment by the student in graduate courses beyond the appropriate time
for a candidacy application does not imply that admission to candidacy for the degree
will be granted.
The proper time for a candidacy application (for all degrees except MMFT, MRE
and MDiv) is immediately after the completion of 12 graduate hours at ACU but
before the beginning of the semester in which a student expects to graduate.
For the MMFT Degree, the candidacy application should be submitted following
30 graduate hours.
For MRE and MDiv Degrees, the candidacy application should be submitted
after the completion of 24 graduate hours and before the completion of 36 graduate
hours. Any student who is transferring in some graduate courses toward the MRE or
MDiv Degree should confer with the departmental graduate advisor as to the
appropriate time to apply for candidacy.
b. Before a student can be admitted to candidacy for the master's degree, one
must have satisfied the following requirements:
(1) Completed at least 12 hours of graduate work(or30 hours for the MMFT, or
24 hours for the MRE or MDiv Degree).
(2) Maintained at least a 3.0 grade-point average on all graduate work completed
up to the date of application, and should not have incomplete grades on
graduate courses.
(3) Performed graduate work up to this point, acceptable to major department,
as attested by departmental approval of candidacy application.
(4) Have on file in the Graduate Office a degree plan which meets the
requirements for the degree program, as well as general requirements of the
Graduate School. The degree plan must have been approved by the student's
major department.10 Abilene Christian University Graduate School
