The Secondary School Teacher
Graduate Advisor: Kelly Hamby
A. Specialization area: Twelve hours of "6000" graduate courses in a subject included
in the public school curriculum in which the student has at least 24 hours of undergraduate
credit in a program for secondary teachers. The fields from which this may
be taken are: biology, business administration, chemistry, communication-speech,
English, history, mathematics, music, and physical education.
B. Professional Development area: six hours
* Education 6337-Improvement of Teaching, Elementary and Secondary
*Education 6343-Curriculum, Elementary and Secondary
C. Resource area: Six semester hours of graduate courses which provide background for
the specialization area or in courses chosen to extend the applicant's preparation in a
subject matter field other than his specialization. These courses may be taken from
agriculture, American Enterprise Forum, art, biology, business administration, chemistry,
communication-speech, English, French, German, history, home economics,
mathematics, music, physical education, physics, psychology, reading, or Spanish.
D. For the Master of Education degree (non-thesis): twelve hours from the following:
*Education 6331-Advanced Study of Adolescence
*Education 6357-Human Relations in Education
Plus 6 hours of graduate work from Education 6344, 5367, 6350, 6353, 6354, 6341,
6363, or other approved courses.
E. There are variations in the above program which can be designed for the student who
does not desire or need a professional teaching certificate.
The School Supervisor
Graduate Advisor: W. H. Avinger
A. Courses required: Fifteen hours in education.
*Education 6337-Improvement of Teaching, Elementary and Secondary
*Education 6343-Curriculum, Elementary and Secondary
* Education 6346-Supervision of Instruction
* Education 6348-Seminar in Supervision of Instruction
*Eduction 6361-Practicum in Supervision
B. Resource area: Twenty-one semester hours as follows:
1. Six to 12 semester hours from one of the following: biology, business administration,
chemistry, communication, English, French, German, history, home
economics, mathematics, music, physical education, physics, psychology,
reading, or Spanish.
2. *Education 6357-Human Relations in Education
Plus 6 to 12 semester hours from the following: Education 5367, 6314, 6315, 6320,
6322, 6324, 6331, 6341, 6344, 6350, 6353, 6354, or other approved courses. Six
semester hours may be selected from American Enterprise Forum.
The School Counselor
Graduate Advisor: Norris C. Campbell
Prerequisites: A Bachelor's Degree, a Provisional Teacher's Certificate, Ed-Psy 4368, Tests and
Measurements, and Psy 3356, Elementary Statistics, or the equivalent.
Teaching experience is not a prerequisite for entering the program, but in order to be certified in
Texas the individual must have completed three years teaching experience.
