discrete and continuous distributions, functions of random variables including moment-generating
functions, limit theorems, random sampling. Prerequisite: Math 1416.
5378. Probability and Statistics. (spring semester following 5377)
Continues the theoretical development of statistics. Properties of estimators, testing hypotheses based
on the Neyman-Pearson lemma, linear models and least squares, design of experiments, analysis of
variance, goodness of fit tests, nonparametric statistics. Prerequisite: Math 5377.
5383. Introduction to Real Analysis. (offered every fall)
A theoretical discussion of the completeness property of the real numbers and its implications for
limits, continuity, differentiation, and Riemann-Stieltjes integration. Prerequisite: 6 hours of
advanced mathematics.
5384. Introductory Real Analysis. (offered every spring of odd-numbered years)
Introduction to the Lebesque integral and its application to sequences and series of functions including
Fourier Series. Prerequisite: 6 hours of advanced mathematics.
5385. Complex Analysis. (offered every spring of even-numbered years)
Complex numbers, analytic functions, contour integrals, power series, residues, conformal mappings.
Prerequisite: 6 hours of advanced mathematics.
5388. Advanced Mathematical Applications.
Studies of topics in applied mathematics. May be repeated for additional credit when topic changes.
Typical topics covered include mathematical modeling, operations research, differential geometry,
partial differential equations.
5190, 5290, 5390. Topics in Mathematics.
