Major Concentration: Graphic Design/Advertising
This concentration combines training in art with that of
journalism and mass communication. It is designed for the
student who desires to enter newspaper, magazine or other
advertising and design fields. A 24-hour block of
communication courses is a major feature of this program.
Students wishing to pursue this program of study should
consult with advisers in both Art and Journalism and Mass
Communication departments.
Departmental requirements for this degree plan are as
follows:
1. Required Art courses, 51 hrs.: ART 101,103, 104,

lecture per week, (2) hours of laboratory per week, and (3)
semester credit hours. An asterisk following these three
figures indicates that the course carries variable or alternative

Art History, Theory, and Appreciation
ART 101 Introduction to Art (3-0-3), fall, spring, summer.
Fundamentals of visual art pertaining to perceptive viewing and
understanding. Course fee: $25.
ART 227 Art History: General Survey I (3-0-3), fall. Art of the
Western World from Prehistoric through Gothic. Course fee: $25.
ART 228 Art History: General Survey I (3-0-3), spring. Art of
the Western World from Renaissance through Moder. Course fee: $25.
ART 474 Art History: Special Topics (3-0-3), on demand. Course
content to be determined by the instructor's special interest or area of
current research. Prerequisite: ART 227, 228, and consent of instructor.
ART 445 Art History: Modern (3-0-3), fall. Art of the 19th and 20th
Centuries in Europe and the United States. Course fee: $25. Prerequisites:
ART 227, 228.
ART 446 Art History: American (3-0-3), spring. Architecture,
painting, and sculpture of the United States from Colonial times to the
present. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: ART 227, 228.
ART 466 Art Theory (3-0-3), on demand. Study of production and
perception in the visual arts. Examination of writings of philosophers of
art, artists, and critics. Prerequisite: ART 445 or equivalent.Drawing
ART 103 Drawing I (2-4-3), fall, spring, summer. Introduction to
studio activity. Visual fundamentals as expressed through drawing. Line,
value, space, texture, proportion, composition. Course fee: $25.
ART 104 Drawing n (2-4-3), spring, summer. Continued exploration
of drawing fundamentals with emphasis on the figure. Course fee: $25.
Prerequisite: ART 103.
ART 221 Drawing III (2-4-3), spring, summer. More complex
drawing problems emphasizing the figure. Emphasis on varied materials,
techniques, and concepts. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: ART 104.
ART 349 Drawing IV (2-4-3), spring, summer. Emphasis on
experimentation with concept and media. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite:
ART 221.
Design
ART 105 Design I (2-4-3), fall, spring. Fundamentals of visual
organization on a two-dimensional plane. Study of value, color, shape, line,
and their interrelationships. Course fee: $25.
ART 106 Design I (2-4-3), spring. Fundamentals of organization in
three-dimensional space. Study of space articulated by line, plane, volume,
and surface. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: Art 105.
ART 107 Color (2-4-3), spring. Physical characteristics and the
physiological, psychological, and aesthetic effects of color in two and three
dimensional design applications. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: Art 105 or
consent of instructor.
Painting
ART 341 Painting I (2-4-3), fall, summer. Problems in pictorial
expression. Oil or acrylics. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: ART 104, 105,
107.
ART 342 Painting I (2-4-3), fall, spring, summer. Continuation of
ART 341. Development of painting problems in keeping with the student's
personal interests and aptitudes. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: ART 341.
ART 471 Painting lI (2-4-3), fall, spring, summer. Increased
emphasis on student initiative and experimentation in problems of content,
style, and technique. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: ART 342 or equivalent.
ART 472 Painting IV (2-4-3), fall, spring, summer. Continuation of
ART 471. The student will be expected to develop a personal style of
pictorial expression. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: ART 471 or equivalent.
Sculpture
ART 333 Sculpture I (2-4-3), fall, spring. Introduction to sculpture.
Modeling, aluminum casting, stone carving. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite:
ART 106.
ART 357 Sculpture II (2-4-3), fall, spring. Continuation of ART 333
with emphasis on welding and soldering techniques, wood construction,
and bronze casting. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: ART 333.
ART 468 Sculpture 11 (2-4-3), fall, spring. Advanced sculpture
problems with emphasis on content. The student is encouraged to
experiment with new materials and techniques. Course fee: $25.
Prerequisite: ART 357 or equivalent.
ART 479 Sculpture IV (2-4-3), fall, spring. Problems involving larger
scale forms with medium and technique chosen by the student. Course fee:
$25. Prerequisite: ART 468 or equivalent.
Ceramics
ART 361 Ceramics I (2-4-3), fall, spring, summer. Introduction to
ceramics. Construction of pottery forms by hand building and on the
potter's wheel. Course fee: $25.
ART 362 Ceramics I (2-4-3), fall, spring, summer. Development of
proficiency on the potter's wheel. Concentration on design and
introduction to glazes. Course fee: $25. Prerequisite: ART 361.30 Art
