The Department of Computer Science in the College of
Natural and Applied Sciences offers the Bachelor of
Science Degree and the Bachelor of Arts Degree.
Current faculty members are listed at the end of this
section.
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Computer Science seeks to blend the
best of scholarship and professionalism to produce
graduates capable of long-term success as computing
professionals. All majors take a core of coursework which
helps to provide the theoretical foundation necessary to
compete in an area whose technological base doubles
every five years. To insure its commitment to excellence,
the department maintains a course offering consistent with
the guidelines set forth by the 75,000-member Association
for Computing Machinery model curriculum guide. Each
faculty member maintains membership in the ACM.
An active ACM Student Chapter provides nationally
known guest speakers and social activities. Students have
demonstrated their abilities through successful
competition in regional and national programming
contests.
If you are familiar with Pascal, you should take the
College Board Advanced Placement Examination in
Computer Science before you graduate from high school.
You can earn four to seven hours of college credit
depending upon your score on this exam. If you know
Fortran, arrange to take the CLEP exam in Fortran while
in high school or prior to your second semester as a
freshman.
Abilene Christian University has dedicated a VAX 11/785
operating under VMS for academic purposes. In addition,
ACU is a member of BITNET and THEnet. Via these
networks, students have terminal access to a CDC Dual
Cyber 170/750 and a VAX 11/780 operating under UNIX.
Software includes Fortran, COBOL, Pascal, C, BASIC,
LISP, SNOBOL, and various statistical, modeling, and
graphics application packages. The department makes use
of a number of microcomputers as well as single-board
microcomputer trainer units.
Students who wish to teach computer science in secondary
schools may pursue either a Bachelor of Science with a
major in Interdisciplinary Studies or a Bachelor of Arts in
Computer Science. Either of these degrees offers the
student an advantage in the competition for teaching
positions. Many high schools are adding microcomputing
to their curriculum, and the demand for teachers in this
field is expected to far exceed the supply for years to
come. The BS Interdisciplinary Studies requires a
minimum of 25 semesters hours in computer science. See
the Department of Education section of the catalog for amore detailed description of this degree. A more detailed
description of the Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science
appears below.
GENERAL DEPARTMENTAL
REQUIREMENTS
To take upper-division computer science courses, a
student must maintain a minimum grade point average of
2.5 in all computer science courses attempted. Some
required courses are offered only once every two years.
You must be careful to take required courses when they
are offered. Consult with your advisor as to which
semester a given course will be offered.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE
All tracks require core courses in computer science,
business, business and professional writing, and
mathematics. The General Computing track is designed
for the student who would like to enhance his education
beyond the scope of the General Education requirements
by taking advanced electives in other disciplines. The
System Software track requires a more comprehensive
knowledge of compiler design, operating systems, and
electronics. Stressing more science, more mathematics,
and less business applications, the Scientific Applications
track is designed for students interested in applications in
the sciences and mathematics.
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to this program, a student must
satisfy the requirements listed under "Initial Academic
Programs," p. 15.
General Education Requirements
General Education requirements for the BS are listed on
page 19.
