Information
Introduction to ACU
Abilene Christian University is an independent,
comprehensive university. Founded in 1906 in
Abilene, Texas, by members of the churches of
Christ, the school maintains a strong relationship
with the church. It is a residential university which
encourages individual interaction among its 4800
students, teachers, administrators, and staff
members. The environment on campus and in
classrooms and dormitories facilitates learning,
personal development, physical well-being, and
growth in Christian character. It also encourages
an open-minded search for truth. Both the graduate
and undergraduate programs at ACU are accredited
by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The university is a non-profit institution without
access to public financing. However, because of
endowment and gifts from alumni and other
interested individuals and foundations, students
are charged only about half the actual cost of their
education. Many students also qualify for various
forms of financial aid, scholarships, grants, loans,
and work opportunities.
Mission
The mission of Abilene Christian University is to
educate its students for Christian service and
leadership throughout the world.
The university emphasizes Christian values.
Faculty and students work together toward
spiritual, social, intellectual, and professional goals
in undergraduate and graduate programs in both
liberal and professional studies. Spiritual goals
include teaching students, and all members of the
university community, to love and honor God, to
study the Bible as God's Word, and to become
Christ-governed individuals. Social, intellectual,
and professional goals stimulate students to
acquire skills, knowledge, and attitudes for dealing
successfully with people, ideas, and physical things
in order to serve and lead throughout the world.
Faculty, Staff, and Students
ACU maintains a dedicated and well-prepared
faculty and staff. The school emphasizes excellence
in classroom teaching but also encouragessignificant research, creative production,
publication, and other scholarly activities by its
faculty and students in order to enhance its
academic programs, stimulate its students, and add
to mankind's knowledge.
For the most part, the students at ACU are well
prepared academically, strong in character, and
highly motivated. The school usually enrolls
students from all 50 states and from about 35
foreign countries. An important objective of ACU's
student recruitment program is to attract a broad
spectrum of well-prepared students from various
cultures, economic levels, and age groups.
International Emphasis
Graduates of Abilene Christian University are
found in all parts of the world. The university
motivates its students, gives them the necessary
international perspective and cross-cultural
sensitivity, and offers courses to prepare them to
live and work in various cultures. Many ACU
students participate in foreign campaigns and
missions during summers and holidays. Others
study overseas through ACU's Campuses Abroad
program, and ACU's international students have a
broadening influence on the other students. A large
number of faculty members travel widely
throughout the world, enlarging their own
perspectives and sharing their expertise with
graduates and friends of the university and with
citizens of other lands.
Undergraduate Colleges
Abilene Christian University consists of six
undergraduate colleges: the College of Liberal and
Fine Arts, the College of Natural and Applied
Sciences, the College of Biblical Studies, the
College of Professional Studies, the College of
Business Administration, and the Abilene
Intercollegiate School of Nursing. The university
offers 71 baccalaureate degree programs, five
associate degrees, and a number of certification
programs. Approximately 3700 undergraduate
students are now enrolled in the university.
Ideally, graduates at the baccalaureate level who
have gone through the core curriculum and spent
four or more years on campus should:
1. Speak and write effectively in English as a
result of clear thinking and extensive reading,
writing, and observation;
2. Be able to read at least one language in addition
to English;
