Human Communication - COMS
COMP 553 Hearing Rehabilitation. Theory and practice of
acoustic amplification, auditory training, speech reading, speech
rehabilitation, and educational considerations for testing the
hearing impaired and deaf education.
COMP 556 Advanced Speech-Language Pathology I. A
study of articulation, language, language development, and
fluency disorders. Includes case studies and clinical observation.
COMP 557 Advanced Speech-Language Pathology II. A
study of organic speech and language disorders speech problems
associated with cleft palate, cerebral palsy, laryngeal problems,
aphasia and motor speech disorders. Includes case studies and
clinical observations.
COMP 569 Linguistics. The science of language with particular
emphasis on descriptive and contrastive linguistics,
current trends in sociolinguistics, language development, and
bilingual and cultural linguistic concepts. (Same as ENGL 569
and EDUC 569).
COMP 571 Methods in Language and Learning Disabilities.
A survey of the more prominent methodological
approaches to the theory and management of children with language
and/or learning disabilities. (Same as SPED 577).
COMP 579 Communication Disorders Among the Elderly.
Past, present, and future of health care delivery system for the
elderly. Communication disorders in aging. Principles of wellness,
institutional care, quality of life issues, and legal, ethical
and spiritual implications.
COMP 580 Diagnostic Methods in Speech-Language
Pathology. Theoretical and laboratory study of instruments,
practices and paradigms used in diagnosis, assessment and
treatment of speech and language disorders.
COMP 581 Anatomical and Physiological Processes of
Communication. Fundamental principles of normal anatomy,
neurology with special reference to the functions related to
speech, hearing and language.
COMP 593, 594 Clinical Practica in Speech-Language
Pathology. Experience in clinical procedures in speech-language
pathology. Designed to provide the student with
supervised experience with diagnostic and clinical treatment procedures
in communication disorders. Prerequisite: COMP 580.
COMP 600 Guided Study. Various specialized topics to be
selected. May be repeated for up to six hours of credit.
COMP 611 General Research Methods. An introduction to research
methods and their application to research problems.
Prerequisite: A course in statistics or tests and measurements.
(Same as BIBM 619, EDUC 611, and PSYC 611).
COMP 620 Communication Research Methods. Research
methods used in communication. Emphasis on the scientific
method, survey research, laboratory research, sampling procedures,
questionnaire construction, and interviewing techniques.
(Same as JMC 620 and COMS 620).
COMP 659 Seminar in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Theory
in Speech Pathology. Studies in a specialized area of speech
pathology; evaluation of diagnostic and therapeutic literature.
May be taken more than one semester. Limit: six hours.
COMP 661 Special Problems in Speech Pathology and
Audiology. In-depth study of various problems, concepts and
subjects in speech pathology and audiology. May be taken more
than one semester. Limit: six hours.
COMP 670 Seminar in Speech Pathology. Evaluation of the
theoretical and experimental research literature in speech
pathology on various topics. May be taken for more than one
semester. Limit 6 hours.
COMP 698 Research Project-Thesis Equivalent. May consist
of three or six hours credit. To be presented, with Departmental
approval, in lieu of the traditional thesis.COMP 699 Thesis for Master's Degree. Normally six hours
credit.

COMS 500 Guided Study. Variable topics in the study of
human communication. Topics include contemporary rhetorical
theory, corporate and legal advocacy, communication campaigns,
and negotiation strategies. May be repeated up to six hours
credit.
COMS 504 Expository Preaching. Focuses on rigorous exegesis
for preaching and effective delivery of sermons based on
the unique styles, problems and themes of diverse Biblical
genre. (Same as BIBM 504).
COMS 521 Leadership and Communication. The study of
leadership emerging because of communication skills. Examines
leadership as related to personal traits, functions and situations.
Special attention to small group and leadership in
organizational settings.
COMS 536 Nonverbal Communication. Theory and practice
of nonverbal communication in relation to numerous nonverbal
behaviors in numerous contexts and human interactions.
COMS 543 Business and Professional Communication.
Adapts communication theory to the organizational setting in
order to provide guidelines for the improvement and refinement
of communication skills needed by those entering business and
professional careers. These skills include reasoning, interviewing,
conflict management, and public speaking.
COMS 545 Intercultural Communication. Stresses understanding
of contrasting cultures and ways of communicating
with individuals and groups from cultures around the world as
well as subcultures within the United States.
COMS 575 Persuasion and Attitude Change. Includes
theories and principles of communication useful in a number of
contexts where individual or group change is important.
COMS 576 Family Communication. An in-depth analysis of
communication theory and research applied to family relationships
from a family systems perspective.
COMS 583 Communication in Multi-National Organizations.
Designed to introduce students to intercultural
communication theories applied to information needs and
human resource management in multinational organizations.
COMS 585 Organizational Communication. The theory and
function of communication within business, government, hospitals,
schools, industrial firms and other organizations, with
emphasis on concepts and principles for effective management.
COMS 586 Communication Instruction in Organizations.
A study of the development and execution of communication
training and development programs for members of organizations
by communication specialists.
COMS 591 Rhetorical Theory. A study of speakers, speeches
and rhetorical theories of the ancient world plus a survey of
Renaissance and contemporary rhetorical theories.
COMS 600 Guided Study. May be repeated for up to six hours
of credit with variable topics.
COMS 620 Communication Research Methods. Research
methods used in communication. Emphasis on the scientific
method, survey research, laboratory research, sampling procedures,
questionnaire construction, and interviewing techniques.
(Same as JMC 620 and COMS 620).
COMS 636 Seminar in Communication Theory. An introduction
to the major concepts of communication theory and research
in the areas of verbal and nonverbal interaction, meaning, information,
persuasion, interpersonal, group and organizational
communication.
