PSYC 573 Psychology of Exceptional Children. A survey of
the nature and needs of exceptional children, including the mentally
retarded, gifted, and emotionally disturbed. (Same as
EDUC 573).
PSYC 574 The Emotionally Disturbed Child. A study of social
and emotional deviance in children including intervention
and prevention strategies (Same as EDUC 574).
PSYC 575 Organizational and Industrial Psychology. The
application of psychological principles to business and industrial
problems Prerequisite: PSYC 120.
PSYC 576 Psychology of Mental Retardation. The nature
and characteristics of mental retardation and its social, emotional,
and cognitive aspects. (Same as EDUC 576).
PSYC 577 Methods in Language and Learning Disabilities.
A survey of more prominent theoretical approaches to the education
of the retarded Special emphasis is placed on the practical
application of various methodologies. (Same as COMS 571 and
EDUC 577).
PSYC 579 Psychophysiology. An overview of nervous system
functioning and an exploration of the methods of measurement
of psychological processes reacting to stimulus input considering
current topics and research.
PSYC 581 Curriculum for the Mentally Retarded. The adaptation
of usual and special methods for teaching the retarded. A
knowledge of effective methods, techniques, and materials as
well as an understanding of curricula for the normal child is
presupposed. Prerequisite: EDUC-PSYC 476, EDUC-PSYC 477
and basic work in elementary education. (Same as EDUC 581).
PSYC 582 Abnormal Psychology. An analysis of the types of
psychological abnormalities, their etiologies and accepted
methods of treatment. Prerequisite: 12 hours in psychology.
PSYC 586 Counseling With Older Adults and Their
Families. Obtain an understanding of how cultural experiences
impact the aging process; including assessment of problems,
mental health issues and community resources. Introduces a
range of counseling techniques, intervention strategies, behavior
change concepts and related issues. Prerequisites: Consent of
the instructor. (Same as GERO 486).
PSYC 587 Personality Theories. A survey of major personality
theories. Prerequisite: 15 hours of psychology.
PSYC 591 Group Dynamics. The principles and operations underlying
group actions and interactions.
PSYC 592 Child Psychology. An advanced course in the behavior
of children.
PSYC 593 History, Theories and Systems. The historic and
systematic development of psychology as a science, and the
theoretical bases for the various areas of psychology. Prerequisite:
15 hours of psychology.
PSYC 598 Psychology of Religion. An investigation of the
relationship of psychological and emotional factors relating to
religious experience and thought, on both an individual and a
group basis (Same as BIBM 598).
PSYC 600 Guided Study. May be repeated for up to six hours
of credit.
PSYC 611 General Research Methods. An introduction to research
methods and their application to research problems.
Prerequisite: PSYC 556 or 568 or equivalent. (Same as COMS
611 and EDUC 611).
PSYC 625 Seminar in Small Group Behavior. Observation
and analysis of human behavior in small groups. Abstraction of
taken-for-granted behavior patterns and fundamental psychological
variables universal to such groups.PSYC 631 Human Life Cycle II. Provides a thorough survey
of the specified divisions of the life span -- from early adulthood,
through middle adulthood and late adulthood to death.
PSYC 640 Individual Intelligence Testing. In addition to the
academic work, the student will be required to administer a minimum
number of individual intelligence tests in a realistic
situation under supervision. Prerequisite: PSYC 568 and 556,
and consent of professor.
PSYC 641 Behavioral Medicine. The study of psychological
factors which influence physical health and illness and the application
of behavioral principles to the prevention and
treatment of illness and the promotion of health.
PSYC 643 Non-Projective Personality Testing. A survey of
the most widely used non-projective personality instruments, excluding
the MMPI; their characteristics, uses, and limitations;
practice in administration, scoring, and interpretation of results.
PSYC 645 Diagnostic Testing. Advanced study of administration,
scoring, and interpretation of tests used to analyze
educational and emotional problems. Some attention is also
given to report writing. Prerequisite: PSYC 582 and PSYC 640.
PSYC 648 Advanced Psychotherapeutic Techniques. Intense
exposure to at least three currently-practiced techniques
of psychotherapy. Discussion of theory, practice and research;
demonstrations and observed student practice.
PSYC 650 Introduction to Clinical Psychology. An overview
of activities and responsibilities in clinical and community
psychology. Introduction to personality theories, psychopathology,
diagnostic interviewing, psychological assessment,
psychotherapy techniques, and research methods. Not a practicum.
Prerequisite: Admission to degree program in
Counseling/Clinical Psychology, School Psychology.
PSYC 657 Intermediate Statistics. An introduction to such
topics as statistical inferences, sampling techniques, hypothesis
testing, design of experiments, analysis of variance, special correlation
methods, multiple prediction, and errors of
measurement. Prerequisite: PSYC 556 or its equivalent.
PSYC 660 Clinical Assessment. Theoretical issues and research
in clinical assessment with special reference to
administration and interpretation of testing procedures and clinical
interviewing. Specific training with various methods of
personality testing, behavioral assessment, and interviewing
techniques. Prerequisite: PSYC 568, 582, and 587 or their
equivalents, and PSYC 640 and 650. Fee: $25.
PSYC 664 Career Analysis and Information. A study of social,
economic, and occupational information as related to
helping relationships. It is designed to acquaint the student
with the essential nature of such information in career decision
making, job analysis, and its use in career counseling.
PSYC 670 Introduction to Neuropsychological Assessment.
Theory, research and practice related to the behavioral
expression of brain dysfunction. Overview of selected neuropsychological
instruments in current use and their clinical
applications. Emphasis on a functional, hypothesis-testing approach
and the integration of case history and test data to
determine diagnostic indications and remedial prescriptions. Prerequisite:
PSYC 233, 589, or their equivalents, and PSYC 640
and 650. Fee: $25.
PSYC 682 Advanced Psychopathology. Review of theoretical
and empirical literature definitions and systems of classifying
deviant behavior patterns. Coverage of specific areas of pathology
including situational reactions, emotional disorders,
characterological disorders, substance abuse, chronic disorders,
and family dysfunction. Instruction in purpose and use of DSMIII-R.
Prerequisite: PSYC 582 or equivalent or consent of
instructor.
PSYC 686 Pre-Retirement Planning. An overview of social
