01 INCONSISTENCY was observed m a recent editorial
ANOTT
torial comment by an area editor The editor apparently was
irked because Ralph Yarborough had not made himself a rubbers
imp for I vndon Johnson even though it meant compromising a
conviction when the Gore resolution came up
The editor said in effect that he had followed Yarborough s record
since he hail been in Washington and could not find one commendable
thing he had done in all that time
In view of the fact that Yarborough and Johnson have voted
together more than SO per cent of the time and since Yarborough
apparently is always wrong it seems a little inconsistent that this
editor could conscientiously support Johnson for president
Or is it that we humans are more interested in a personality than
we are in an issue The press in Texas has often been critical of a
Yarborough vote even when Johnson voted the same way yet no
reference was made to Johnsons vote
COUNTS EDITOB
OR THREE years ago when we were helpirg promote
rO
tho candidacy of Ralph Yarborough for the U S Senate on a
television network originating In Lubbock our host in Lubbock was
one F O Masten who was also footing the bill for the television time
Wo suspected that Mr Masten was pretty well fixed since they
dont give away television time At that we were a little embarrassed
when he always picked up the check after a meal Our embarrassment
ended last week however when we read that Mr Masten
one of the largest Individual landholders in Texas had bought the
Illsection Matador Ranch in Oldham county for a paltry 2000000
bringing his holdings to 125000 acres
Had we known that Mr Masten had that kind of folding money
we would have ordered a dipper of ice cream for our pie

TOOK ON a metropolitan atmosphere last week with
rlAA
the completion of the Highway 87 underpass and overpass and
tho system of service roads The project including nghtofway exceeded
a half million dollars in cost
When we see a sign Dimmitt West along with an arrow pointing
east we are really uptown
Theres only one sour note in connection with this magnificent
expressway and that it the inconvenience caused some of Tulias
most important business etablUhments particularly Waynes Hillcrest
Restaurant Hillcrest Motel Hillcrest Service Station and Tulia Drive
in Theatre
ReaHy these business escabhsamenis are accessible tn traffic from
all directions but it will require a Hale orientatkm on the part of
the public
Traffic from the north and east and from Tulia will have no
difficulty in reaching these businssssi if they merely take the service
road at the intersection of Highway 17 and South led street
This service road leads directly to lUllereet But in case you haf m
