thousands of dollars are spent because people take pride in the looks
of their business and of their community
Swisher Eleitnc Cooperative perhips could get by in a warehouse
type building located in the isolated part of town But then is mire to
life than giving only a minimum of service
The Tirst National Bank is another example of a busmtss pvmp
moe than is expected Its conference room with kitchen facil tics
which it furnishes together with maid service for public melting is
one of the nicest things that ever happened to Tulia This is someih n
not ordinarily associated with banking and no doubt thr bank could
have saved this expenditure
What would Tulia be like if every merchant was lik > a fw we
have who live only for themselves never participating in i romnunty
project never contributing to a Christmas decoration fund n r dr
nating to a worthy cause never belonging to a service c ub n vcr
shouldering even a minor part of community responsibilitv
If all were llko this minority of merchants Tuba wou d mvtr
have even a Christmas light at Christmastime We would hivo n >
newspaper or radio station Ve would have no school arbook
We would have nothing but a decaying and shrinking lomminv
with trade drying up little by little
Wonder what Tuba would be like if everybody was just I k vou

Of Swisher County Electric Cooperativi the con i rn
SPEAKING sensitive about being called the REA The lor il
cooperative is NOT a government agency It is an organijt on of
local farmers who went togethir to build an electrical distribution
system They might have also built their own electrical gcnirating
plant but instead they buy their electricity from Southwestern J ublic
service They might have borrowed this money from any private
money lender had any private lender been willing to make such a loan
But since such loans were not available for such purposes the government
agreed to step in and provide this service which private enterprise
would not provide Theyre wonderful customers of private enterpriseSo the local corporatio i borrows this money from a governmental
agency called the Rural Electric Administration It repays its loan
with interest and it might be said that the local cooperative has
always been ahead on its repayments
To call the local organization the REA is like calling a local
business the FNB because it had borrowed money from the First
National Bank
Swisher County Electric Cooperative is NOT a government agency
It Is a locally owned concern which feels its responsibility to the
community as does any good citizen and it is a community asset In
that its new building will be on the tax rolls of the various taxing
agencies and it furnishes a local payroll for a number of people

community in more ways than one He is especially active as a

If it is needed for local police duty
It seems that our longoverdue National Guard armory may possibly
become a reality Promises of this sort mean little
