My favorite character in the
Christmas story Is the inn keeper
Perhaps its because Im always
on the side of the underdog Maybe
it is because I dont think the
man has ever had a fair hearing
Perhaps its because Ive seen
too many lazy preachers ride the
guy to the ground for an easy
point in some sermon about giving
Jesus no room In our hearts
Acutally the guy was very Inventive
The Scriptures plainly
state that there was no room in
the Inn for Joseph and Mary
The fellow could not kick ou t
some paying guest He had obligations
legal liability and common
decency to consider And
anyway the very ones he kicked
out might have been expecting a
baby that night also
So what did he do He told
them the only privacy he had
left was In his barn But at
least he offered them that And
they took It gratefully They did
nt condemn him They probably
paid for the barn and were glad
that there was someplace out of
the public gaze that they could
hide
Preachers tell people to use
what they have for the glory of
God and miss the greatest example
in the Bible a barn which
became a kings nursery And I
know it was a cave but that is
even more spectacular Even the
denizens of the wild gave way to
the birth of Jesus
And look at the terrible judge
ment this story levels against America
With half the worlds
children never knowing a f u 11
meal we pay over a million dol
lars a day to store food The
