GOING TO elect a nnv U S Senator from Texas in
WERE
a few weeks Interest in this allmportant race seems to bi
at a low ebb due perhaps to a reaction from the feverish tempo
til the Presidential election last fall Poll tax payments In Texas are off
Although the issues in the forthcoming election are just as vital
tis were tlio e in th Presidential election the personality element will
not enter so much into the Senatorial ekclion and it seems we have
to rally people around a personality in order to interest them In
politic
COUNTir iDiroit
US CONSIDER the various candidates in the Senate race
LET
and t looks like we will have 16 to 18
Not more than five or six will attract any groat volume of votes
The remainder will perhaps chalk up a few hundred votes from
personal friends and crackpots who think it clever to waste votes on
unknown candidates who havent got a chance of winning Of the
five or six top men we could conscientiously support three or four
if only one was running
Senator Henry Gonzalez is a brilliant and highly qualified Mexican
The world wouldnt come to an end should he be elected U S Senator
and we could do much much worse But to be practical and realistic
Texas isnt going to send a Mexican to the U S Senate
President Kennedy could do well to send a man with Gonzalezs
quaLficafcons to soma South American country as ambassador He has
the personality and the ability to do much In improving our relations
with our neighbors to the south
COUNT Y 1DITOH
AURY MAVERICK is another good man who could represent
us well in Washington He has a lot of ability and no one
would have to apologize for supporting iiim
Will Wilson is a friend of ours We had hoped to support him
for governor in 1960 but of course he decided instead to run for
attorney general And we owe him a lot for stopping Waggoner Carr
We could be enthusiastic about Wilsons candidacy if it were not
for the fact that Congressman Jim Wright of Fort Worth is in the race
COUNtJT tDITOI
S WE HAVE said so many times in this column we never have
the choice of selecting the perfect candidate from among one or
more imperfect ones Our choice always is to select th best man
ru rong at the time Thats why we supported Pr ce Daniel for governor
in I960 he was a better candidate for the officj than Jack Cox
counthy toito
WE WANTED to be strictly political selecting the Democrat
SF
who had been most loyal to the Democratic party of Texas we
perhaps Would vote for Maverick But we feel that we are living
in perilous times times so perlous that it is of utmost importance
to achieve as nuch unity as possible with n our state Ralph Yar
borcugh has a strong following in Texas But he also has many enemies
tn the right Wing To support a candidate equally as objectionable to
the right wing would not make for unity
Even mors objectionable would be the election of an ulra right
winger such as Republican Tower or Bill Blakley who would be
completely obnoxious to the loyal Democrats of Texas Furthermore
it is not for the good of Texas that we send someone o Washington
who cannot get along with Yarborough Ksnnedy Johnson and Raybum
Much good can be accomplished If we have a united Texas delegation
not ony in the Congress but in the Executive branch
couKTiY torto
WRIGHT has everything for making an ideal U S Senator
JEM
in our opinion He is the right ag 33 We all know that only
through tenure can a Senator become really effective Wright is old
enough and experienced enough having served six years in th House
of Representatives yet he is also young enough to serve several
trms in the Senate
Wright is a good Democrat During one of the state convention
steals he mounted the platform and made one cf the most eloquent
sTpeals for political honesty and integrity Texas Democrats have ever
heard He explained that he wasnt representing either faction that
he was just a plain Democrat who thought the party should be run
according to ths rules of honesty and fair play
Wnght is a man who could ork effectively with Yarborough yet
he has the support of many antiYarborough people Most of the Yar
k > rough people ars supporting him but he also has the support of
such people as the Republican mayor of Fort Worth This is due la
part to the fact that Wright is Congressman from Fort Worth Even
the Fort Worth StarTelegram is vigorously supporting Wright In this
day when a mans worst enemies are often those from his hometown
it is a tribute to Wnght that Fort Worth is giving him such solid
sjpport He said Saturday that the Fort Worth mayor recently intn >

introduction with several minor changes would have made a perfect
funeral tribute Although many of the 400 supported Nixon last fall
when Wright was campaigning vigorously for Kennedy and Johnson

Wright is vry conversant with the farm problem He and Walter
Rogers are cosponsoring a bill which would bring some sugar beet
acreage to this area
I Wright former mayor of Weatherford served as president of the
