wood from Lee county, presented by J. A. Mc-
Millan. One whose endogeneous structure dis-
closed a very lino grained wood was possibly

Tho regular meeting of the Young Men's
Christian Association Literary society will be
held Monday night. A good attendance of mem-
bers is desired. Hardly a meeting now at which
a new member i* not added to t i«e society.
The secretary desires to have the names of
friends who will entertain delegates to the state
convention, which is to convene here on the 2ith
instant. Please consult with him concerning
same. This convention will last four days, and
will have representatives from almost every
town of any size in the state. About sixty dele-
gates are to be cared for and we trust a hearty
response will be received to this call.

A large crowd will leave tho city to-morrow to
attend the shoot at Bray's bayou.
Tno Sunday-echools of the Mclvee Street
Methodist church, Fourth Ward Presbyterian
mission, and First Baptist church are enjoying
picnics to-day.
The Houston Turnverein will hold an im-
portant business meeting to-morrow morning.
City Secretary and Treasurer Bringliurst has
thus far issued about 200 ccrtillcates to sidewalk
contractors, who are finishing about a dozen
blocks per week.
Several new buildings to be used for store pur-
poses are being erected on Congress street.
Mr. S. C. Collins and Miss Nettie Fairclillds
have been selected by the colored teachers of
the city public schools as delegates to tho Col-
ored State Teachers' association, which con-
venes in Waco on the 21stproximo. An exhibit
of tho work done i^tho Houston schools will be
forwarded.
The public school children will he given a
holiday on tho 24th instant, tho first day of tho
volksfest celebration.

Galveston, is in the city visiting relatives.
G. II. R. Van Hagen, one of the handsomest
and most popular commercial men in Texas,is in
the city from Galveston, and leaves to-morrow
for the west.
Mrs. C. W. Robinson has returned from a
brief visit to Now Orleans.
E. D. Stead man has returned from a business
trip in tlio interior.
A. Christensen, superintendent of the Wells.
Fargo & Co's. express, has returned from a brief
visit to Gaiveston.
Mr. Will Clark and his mother have returned
from a brief visit of some weeks to Mrs. Wal-
lace, nee Miss Julia Clark, who now resides in
Waco.
Mrs. E. V. Vincent has been quite ill, but her
friends will bo giad to know that she is now
convalescent.
Major Robert Burns has returned from a brief
visit to Galveston.
Sent to Jail Without Bail.
Denton, Tex., May 4.—From evidence
produced in the preliminary trial here yes-
terday and to-day, T. j. Green and Mac
Green, brothers, were sent to jail without
being allowed bail, charged with the mur-
der of Sam Smith.

been Tom instead of Bill Green as the party
who confessed to the killing of Smith.
