Lipscomb County Post Offices

The Booker Post Office was established on September
4, 1919, after getting moved from LaKemp,
Oklahoma. It was located in a building on Main
Street in Booker, which is still standing in the original
spot, 108 South Main. The office remained
there until the new building was erected by Mrs.
Ida Benesch of Amarillo, Texas, at 122 South Austin,
and was dedicated February 15, 1964.
There have been seven postmasters serving the
Booker office since it was established. Jesse Bell
was the appointed postmaster on September 4,
1919. Following Bell as postmaster was Ralph R.
Williams, April 24, 1920; Dollie Miller, October 24,
1921; Wilce Garton, April 10, 1922; Alpha Garton,
December 28, 1933. After Mrs. Garton's retirement
on March 31, 1963, Zella Mae Wauhob was
appointed acting postmaster April 1, 1963, and
served until the appointment of A. M. Lemons in
October, 1965.
The Booker area has been served by two rural
routes. Carriers who have served Rural Route 1 are
H. C. Weathers, R. L. Pounds, Ralph E. Harter,
Bryan Smith, and Cecil Slovacek. Rural Route 2
carriers have been Frank E. Fowler, Mr. McFall, F.
A. Kerns and M. T. Mounsey. T. I. Vaughn was substitute
carrier for these routes for over thirty
years. At the present time Mrs. Fern Burch and C.
C. Pulls are serving as substitute carriers.

Augusta C. Anderson, September 20, 1906; Peter
Hartman, June 6, 1914. Discontinued December 15,
1915. Moved to Higgins.
Darrouzett, Texas
Lourwood, Texas Post Office. Wm. L. Allen,
April 5, 1918. Name changed to Darrouzett, Texas,
July 16, 1919. Wm. L. Allen, July 16, 1919; Marcus
L. Beck appt. act. postmaster April 27, 1921; Marcus
L. Beck appr. P.M. June 22, 1921; Lula Winfough
acting P.M. Nov. 11, 1943; Lula Winfough
appointed P.M. Nov. 12, 1944; Opal E. Burton acting
P.M. Dec. 29, 1963; Betty J. Yauck P.M. Nov.
12,1965.
Follett, Texas
May S. Johnson was appointed postmaster of
Follett, Texas, June 5, 1918. She received a presidential
re-appointment April 1, 1921, and a presidential
and senate re-appointment March 23, 1922.
Edson E. King received his presidential and senate
appointment July 2, 1926 and was reappointed
by president and senate June 20, 1930.
The following is a list of other Follett postmasters
and the date of their appointment: A. C. Cotney,
July 1935; A. C. Cotney, Jr., February 1949;and Dorothy Schoenhals, December 1963.

Kiowa, Texas
Kiowa located on Section 1174, Block 43, two
miles south of Booker, near the old Jones and
Plummer trail, in Mary A. and Harry H. Mitchell's
home. Mary A. Mitchell was appointed postmaster
August 9, 1902. Maggie C. Bowdle (Mrs. Oral Bowdle)
was appointed postmaster October 22, 1910,
and moved the office to the Jim Foley place on Section
1083, Block 43, three miles east and four miles
south of Booker, where the Bowdles resided at that
time. Later they moved one mile northwest to Section
1117, Block 43, where the Kiowa post office
remained until it was discontinued and the mail
was sent to Booker. John Teare and Mrs. Charles
Dickenson were the Star Route carriers from Lipscomb
to the Kiowa Post Office.

Mable, Texas
Mable, Texas was the first Post Office we find a
record of in the Follett area. Thomas A. Buchanan
was appointed the first Postmaster of Mable on
May 20, 1889. One year later on April 10, 1890,
James Hastings was appointed. (At this point it is
interesting to note that a James Hastings waspresident of the State Bank in Higgins, Texas in
