The third term of district court of Smith County convened
in Tyler on the third Monday in June, 1648. Honorable
Oran M. Roberts presided as special judge. Fe wss known as
the "Old Alcalde" and destined to become a long-time citizen
of Tyler and prcuinent in Texas jurisprudence as a lawyer,
judge, and "pay as you go" governor of the state,
The grand jury for this third term of district court
consisted of 'William S. Walker, foreman, John Thomas, William
McAdaaiis, Jonathan Lewter, William McBride, William H.
Stevenson, Agrippe Adkinson, John R. Butter, John Lcve, Isaac
.Waters, J. Kelley, R. S. Bradford, Isaac H. Daniels, and
Stephen Chancey. The bailiff was E. W.- Burroughs.
The petit jury for this third term of district court
ws8 composed of the following members: Thomas J. (ardner,
William J. THuggns, William Garnett, John B. Gilley, Nicholas
Wren, Aibsolem S. Watts, P A.. Merchant, Thomas C. Stern,
Arthur Lott, David H. Lindsey, Elisha Barcroft, ear John
Wolf.
