Scott Pilgrim:
The Graphic Novels
The Scott Pilgrim series of
graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley
is comprised of six volumes that
were released over a six-year period.
The titles in order are: Scott Pilgrim's
Precious Little Life, Scott Pilgrim Vs.
The World, Scott Pilgrim & The Infinite
Sadness, Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together,
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Universe, and Scott
Pilgrim's Finest Hour. They run about $12
each, but some of them can probably be
found cheaper on Amazon.
Scott Pilgrim is a love story, with
video game-style fights, bands and more
awesome characters than you can shake
a stick at. Scott lives in Toronto where he
is in a band with Stephen Stills and his
ex-girlfriend Kim Pines. Scott falls in love
with a mysterious Amazon.ca delivery girl
named Ramona Flowers from New York.
In order to continue dating Ramona, Scott
must defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends.
To quote Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy
the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Doll house,
"Scott Pilgrim is the best book ever. It is
the chronicle of our time. With Kung Fu,
so, yeah: perfect."
Scott Pilgrim is hands down one
of the greatest graphic novels of all time,
and is friendly to comic fans, manga fans,
or as an introduction to graphic fiction for
people that have not read comics since

GRAPHIC NOVELS IN BRIEF
Volume 1 covers Scott's relationship with Knives Chau,
Ramona Flowers and Scott meeting, and Scott's battle with
Ramona's first evil ex-boyfriend Matthew Patel who can sum-
mon evil demon hipster chicks.
Volume 2 tells the tale of the battle with Lucas Lee, Ramo-
na's skateboarding, movie-star evil ex-boyfriend and delves
deeper into Scott's past introducing his own evil ex, Envy
Adams, now a famous rock-star in a band with Ramona's
third evil ex-boyfriend.
Volume 3 contains Scott's epic Dragonball Z like battle with
this evil ex, Todd Ingram, a super-vegan with incredible pow-
ers over energy and matter, because that is what happens
when you are a vegan in Scott Pilgrim's universe apparently.
Volume 4 has Scott confronted by Mr. Chau, Knives' father.
And, his battle with Ramona's fourth evil ex, Roxanne "Roxy"
Richter the half-ninja.
Volume 5 delves deeper into the mystery of music producer
Gideon Graves, Ramona's seventh and final evil ex-boyfriend,
and contains Scott's battle against her fifth and sixth evil ex's
the twins, Kyle and Ken Katayanagi.
Volume 6 Nega-Scott, Gideon Graves, final battle 'nuff said.

World (movie)
The movie was in Stephen-
weeks. Despite
stellar reviews
from critics the
film did not do
very well. While
it was not quite a
box-office disaster,
it did lose money. I
attribute this mostly
to Micheal Cera burn-
out, and the fact that it
was released against The
Expendables and Eat, Pray,
Love, which is going take
out a huge chunk of male and
female viewers of many ages. Read-
ers going out of town that can
find a theater still showing it,
watch it. I highly recommend
it. Or, add it to Netflix or buy it
on sight when it comes to DVD
and Blu-Ray.
The film is, of course,
a truncated version of the
graphic novels leaving out
a lot of character development, but the
fast paced nature of the story lends itself
very well to the tone of Scott Pilgrim, and
director Edgar Wright [Shaun of the Dead,
Hot Fuzz) made it look fantastic. Some
of the characters are cast strangely, Envy
Adams stands out as bearing very little
resemblance to her graphic novel counter-
part. However, others are fantastic, Keiran
Culkin (The Cider House Rules) steals
scenes as Scott's gay roommate Wallace
Wells, Mark Webber {Snow Day) and Al-
lison Pill (Milk) are perfect as Scott's band
mates Stephen Stills and Kim Pines respec-
tively, Brandon Routh (Superman Returns)
is great as Todd Ingram, the same can be
said for Chris Evan's (Sunshine) portrayal
of Lucas Lee. I found most of the other ac-
tor's performances to be at least adequate
if not fantastic. Fortunately, Michael Cera's
(.Superbad) somewhat tired routine works
for Scott Pilgrim, because even I have to
admit, even though I like Michael Cera,
I am getting tired of his acting (or lack
thereof). The movie diverges at the end,
starting where volume six begins. This was
primarily done because the final volume
of the graphic novels came out shortly
before the film, and they did not want to
spoil the book if you saw the movie first
I actually enjoyed the ending of the film
slightly better than the graphic novels, but
as a whole, while an amazing movie, it is
the weakest of the three incarnations of
Scott Pilgrim.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World:
The Game
Wow! For those of you that have not played River City
Ransom, imagine Final Fight or Double Dragon with a dash of RPG
elements (but, do not expect hours of reading or long cinematics)
so that your characters learn new moves and get more powerful as
you go through the game. For those that have played the legend-
ary River City Ransom, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game, is like
that, but better. Incredibly addictive, it has four-player co-op, zombie
survival and boss rush modes, a ton of retro-style video game cheats,
multiple endings and a world map very reminiscent of the map from
Super Mario Bros. 3. Eight levels, three difficulty settings and a ton of
stuff to find and unlock make this game easily worth the download.
The art direction by Paul Robertson is amazing, and amps up the
video game influences of Scott Pilgrim. Virtually every character from
the graphic novels at least make an appearance and you can play as
Scott, Ramona, Kim Pines or Stephen Stills. It is available on Xbox 360
and PS3 for about $10. The only complaints I have about the game
are the lack of drop-in drop-out co-op and online play.
