told us Monday I had Jail
Bat down with the daily paper
thU morning when I noticed
the big headlines about tho
young parent ol th weekend
kidnaping rictlm getting ttwb
baby bade
Before I could read th
story It was already on our
television screen Mr and Mrs
Richard Duano Stammer wen
right there before mo holding
their baby
The 20yearold sailor hus-
band and bis pretty 18year
old wife Shirley were doing
their best to smile and iallc
at the same time
This was not a still pic
ture on the screen but an ac-
tual liring telecast ot the
scene Believe me It boat the
writeup In the paperl
Another thing my Impres-
sion of the episode differed a
bit from the newspaper Tor
sion The writer for the paper
saUJ the spectators in the
yard were crying like babies
They were standing around
and talking among themselTes
but X never noticed any of
them crying
We think television Is wi
derfuL We would sooner do
without our car than our tele
vision set
Yes TV Is ceasing to be a
luxury The newness Is wear
lng off and It Is fast becom
ing a necessity In our daily
lives
One side of the New York
studio where the Dave Garra
way show Is telecast each
morning Is made up of long
glass windows Being on a
busy street there Is always
quite a crowd on the side-
walk looking In
The television camera Is
pointed at the windows from
time to time to show these
people watching the show
Quite a bit of excitement
ensued this Friday morning
when It was discovered that a
wellknown personage was In
the crowd Harry Truman bad
stopped en his morning stroll
and was watching the show
with a broad smile on his face
While Carraway grabbed
the lntcroffice phone to con-
tact studio directors and
photographers Mr Truman
laughed and waved to the
studio personnel
TV vjewers watched while a
Life photographer made a pic-
ture of the former Presidents
informal appearance which
will no doubt appear in cm
early Issue of the magazine
Television viewers watch
ing tho big ClevelandPitts
burgh football game over the
weekend saw an unusual oc-
currence at the half A num-
ber of high school bands were
performing on the Bold when
the halftime was up They
marched off the field into ties
stands
All that is but one ban
which continued to play white
officials tried to get then to
clear the field With the two
teams lined up ready 1 for the
