betore retiring to well merited
obscurity, at thi* placa yesterday
afternoon. He &poke at the
Court-house to a mixed audi-
ence, about equally divideos-
blacks and whites. We must
accord Col. Jones tlie merit of
being a very able and fluent
speaker, but car not sav any-
thing in favor of his argument,
he having a very weak cause.
As he has done repeatedly at
other places, he used all his
logic and eloquence to show
that conventions are wrong—
radically wrong.; yet Col. Jooea
held a convention aud nominat-
ed .himself. He devoted a con-
siderable part ot his address to
setting h'mself right on his, war
record, which, so far as we
know, has never been questioned,
and certainly has np bearing ou
the issues presented in the pres-
ent race. H3 said CoL Giddings
has already been honored by the
people of this district, is rich,
and has money enough- while
he, Jones, is poor and badly in
need of money, and, ought
of right to have some of the
chicken pie. So far as we heard
he did not make a sirglc point
in his own favor, and presented
not a single claim to entitle him
to a Democratic vote. lie oc-

every man do his ditty by voting;
we nee<l and must have even-
vote; let there be uo apathy as
there has been in the past. In
this election there are no indiv-
idual proterence# to«be subserv-
ed ; the questions presented are
purely national in character ; it
is one of two things, either Rad-
icalism and corruption, or Dem-
ocracy and reform, to secure
the latter vote for Tildon and
Hendricks and D. C. Giddings.
Washington county has too long
rested under the Stigma ot being
a Radical county. If every man
opposed to Radical rule will turn
out and ?ote we can carry the
county by at least five hundred
majority.

working directly into the hands
of the Radicals. His speech
was listened to attentively, but
did not at any point elicit the
least token ot applause,
Maj. B. II. Bassett replied
to him at length, meeting and
answering every argument put
forth by Col. Jones and con-
clusively showing their fallacy.
Maj. B. during the course ot
his remarks was frequently and
loudly applauded.
After Maj, Bassett closed,
Jones on being very closely
pressed on the question of who
he was going to vote for, tor
President, finally in an equivocal
way said, '* We are all Demo-

for Tilden and Hendricks of

and only admission of the kind
he has made during tho canvass,
and being a forced one ought
not to count for more than it is
intrinsically worth.
