man with tools to work with.
So I called the city desk, which
dispatched a photographer, and
we took a picture of the callus
and the man shaving it off. Then
I repaired to the city room to
write about this thing.
The phone rang and it was the
man, geting a little nervous, now,
about what publicity would do
to his job. In fact, he wished
he hadn’t even mentioned the
thing to me.
But I calmed his fears, the
story and picture appeared
next day In the paper, and
pretty soon our man had some
help and, with the tempo of
production speeded up, the
code was as finished as any
building code ever is.
(Whereupon it was turned
over to the city legal department
and Bellaire Attorney John Ben-
net, then an assistant city attor-
ney, checked it over from the
legal standpoint.)
Missouri Alumni
Planning Party
The local chapter of the Mis-
souri University and Missouri
School of Mines Alumni plans
its summer get-together begin-
ning at 6:30 this evening at
Grand Prize Brewery, 5301 Polk
Ave.
George Weinman and Miss
Bobbie Dee Davis are handling
arrangements.
For further information call
Mrs. Harland Miller at MO 4-
2070.
What with this outside assis-
tance, our man's finger’s callus
gradually was reduced in sfee
until he had a real normal fin-
ger again—first time in years,
probably- and I forgot the story.
Periodically, though, the prob-
lems of the code, and getting it
printed, would pop tip in the
newspapers. Ami now, a full
five years later, it is in the news
again . . . though slill imprinted.
And, from the stories, it doesn’t
seem that anybody is getting
calluses about it, either.
