New Election Laws Explained
There is much confusion relative
hi the 1838 election laws Purpose
of this article is to help clear tip
a few questions in the minds of
voters,
Basically, there are two new
laws now ell active which change
completely the make-up of the
political conventions. One is cal-
led a "Party Affilliitlon'' law, and
the other fixes new dates for the
primaries and convention ... lie-
low Is a summary of how these
laws affect the Democratic Party
in Texas It's primaries and con-
ventions:
1 A person becomes a "Mem-
ber” of the party when lie votes
In the primary Only party mem-
bers those wlio have voted In
the Primary may participate
ill the Precinct, Oounty and State
Conventions, or hold a Party of-
fice.
V The pou uix receipt form is
ciiMiised to provide a space for
party affiliation. This space Is
filled in only bv the election
judge at the time the voter iwrti-
Cipates In the primary The tux
assessor-collector should not fill
this in, and neither should the

,1 When a person vote's in the
Democratic Primary, the election
judge stamps on the poll tax re-
ceipt, exemption certificate or an
affidavit of loss, the word, "Dem-
ocrat" within the party affilia-
tion space Such action makes the
'■otcr a member of the Demo-
cratic Party for tlie duration of
the poll tax period. He can not,
during the year, participate In
another Party’s conventions
4 Provisions also are made for
the stamping of party affiliation
m the case of absentee voters
5. Persons not required to have
a poll tux receipt or exemption
ertlflcate are furnished a certl-
flrate bv the presiding Judge, at
the time they vote, showing their
party affiliation This certificate
is proof of their party member-
ship and entitles them to partici-
pate in the Party’s Conventions,
fi Delegates to the Stale Con-
vention of June 14 will also serve
as delegates to the subsequent
SLite Convention on Sept 20
7 Violation of the Party Affi-
liation Daw is pulshable by a fine
of from $‘20 to *200
In Wheeler County, voters who
have attained ace BO will not be
required to obtain an exemption

LUTHERANS BELIEVE
THE BIBLE IS FOR EVERYONE
What good don an earth sat-
ellite do you? u depend! on
whose satellite it it—and on what
its purpose sj. _
What the Holy Bible can do
for you also depends upon whose
book it is and what its purpose is.
The Christian Church says,
, . . “The holy Scriptures . . are
able to make thee wise unto sal-
vation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus. All Scripture is
given by inspiration of Cod’.
(U Timothy 3, 1116) ,
Don't dismiss that claim
lightly. When the headlines an-
nounced a satellite, you believed
it Give at least as serious con-
sideration to the claims of the
Christian Church whose message
has changed our world more than
any space missile, Closer to home,
the fact that your Lutheran neigh-
bors, who arc (on the whole) a
fairly stable lot, believe the Bible
is God's Word to man should
make you take a serious second
look at this book.
At first you might think it’s
an enemy missile for sure. It tells
you that your nature is evil and
<
your d-*th will mean an eternal
exile from God But once you
train your sight on the Gospels,
you’ll see it’s on your side. You’ll
see Cod is on your side! He has
given you a way to salvation
through the work of His Son,
Jesus Christ, The Bible urges you
to accept His love and be saved!
It took sixteen centuries to
launch the Bible’s sixty-six books.
Their orbit has expanded through
the years. If you have read this
far, the Bible's message has
reached you, too! Accept it.
Check in with the Church, Make
this weapon yours!

We sometimes speak of ".stocks 1

they were one and the same j .
But when you buy a share of j X
stock In a company, you "own" j *
an "undivided" part of everything ifi
it owns, but no particular piece A
of Its property. j ™
But what do you have when you i, |
buy a corporation's bond or deben- i
tine? You own nothing of the j?
company. Instead you are lending *
money which It promises to pay
back with interest, when your bond
j "matures.”
Unlike a stockholder, a bond-
holder as a rule has little to «ay
directly about who manages and
how he manages the company. I:
Remotely a bond buyer bv with- .
holding or lending money may | f
influence a company’s ability to
expand The bondholder gets only ; *
his Interest payments, which come 'y
before the stockholder’s “divl- r
dends,” since he takes less of a ju
rsk than the stockholders. j y
Tim* If the corporation quits j
or goes bankrupt. It must pay the
bondholders off before the stock- I
holders get anything
Where does the "preferred stock" u
ome In? As a rule, preferred
stockholders collect a fixed divi-
dend — after the bondholders are
paid but before the "common"
stockholdrs get anything. There
aie many kinds of preferred stock
ermngemento. But in return for
their first chance at the profits
the preferred stockholders often
give up anv voting rights or ability
to control the company directly.
