Shofar Factory was a blast
By VICKI SAMUELS LEVY
One of Chabad of Texas’ most popular
events, The Shofar Factory, returned this past
week, teaching youngsters and teens about Rosh
Hashanah and helping them make their very
own shofarot to take home and practice blowing
for the New Year.
One of eight “factories” that were held in
Jewish day schools and the Evelyn Rubenstein
Jewish Community Center, Sunday’s Friendship
Circle factory was a blast for the young people
with special needs and a large group of teen
volunteers, many of whom are paired with
youngsters throughout the year for at-home
activities and holidays.
Rabbis Dovid Goldstein and Zally Lazarus
opened the factory with an entertaining
explanation of the holiday and description of
how shofarot are made. Rabbi Goldstein is
Friendship Circle director and Rabbi Lazarus
and his wife, Esti, are the program coordinators.
Volunteer Zoe Katzenellenbogen - there with
her brother, Zak - was responsible for the great
turnout of teen volunteers, most of whom are
Robert M. Beren Academy students.
The factory also included an
opportunity for the kids and teens to
make colorful Rosh Hashanah cards
for their parents and loved ones. □

Notes removed from Western Wall
JERUSALEM (JTA) - The Western
Wall was emptied of layers of notes
from its cracks and crevices for the
New Year.
The notes were removed
Monday morning, Sept. 10, under
the supervision of the rabbi of
the Western Wall, Rabbi Shmuel
Rabinovich, who ensured that they
would remain confidential. They will
be buried.
At the time of the removal, the
rabbi said a prayer asking G-d to
fulfill the requests contained in the
notes.
The notes are removed from
the wall twice a year, before Rosh
Hashanah and Passover. □
