VfEW YORK—Secrats on Brosd-
iN way travel faster than favor-
ites at Hialeah. I was sitting in the
Beachcomber’s bar having a bowl
of Egg Flower soup when a man
known to all Broadway as Dave
came by. Dave is the proprietor of
Dave’s Blue Room, a famous
Broadway eating place that tailed
several months ago.
Outside of Lindy’s and perhaps
one or two others, none of the late
hour restaurants was as famous or
enjoyed the patronage that was
Dave’s. I never cared much for
the place, personally, because it
was alwsys filled with loud-tslk-
thing*. But in any^case, Dave came
down. He seemed a little excited.
... After a while I said, “What’*
worrying you, DaveT"
Dave flung around and leaned
over the table. “I’m going to open
1 new restaurant—-a swell place
on 52nd street-—* new Blue Room.
But don’t say anything about it
Deal’s all act I’ll announce It in a
couple of weeks. Swell place. Just
fight. Deal’s almost set.”
^’Swell, Dave," I said, “swell”
Naw, I wont say anything.”

OUT Dave ran into reverses and
the Blue Room folded. To
many of Broadway’s best-known
this was a minor tragedy in their
lives. Famous song hits had been
written on the table covers by Tin
Pan alley chiefs between cups of
black coffee. At least one famous
star became engaged over a plate
of Canadian bacon and eggs at
Dave’a. Gangsters went there, too.
.,. Dave's was Broadway.
Now let's get baeictslhe Beach-
comber's. Dave and another man
came in. As he passed I Just hap-
pened to hear him say, “Don’t aay
