TEXAS CHAMPIONS OF FREEDOM
Gallant Pioneer and Defender of His People
Among the many "ull Texans" who
lived too courageously ever to be for-
gotten, and too quietly to make the
he*dlinc> of hiiiory, the name of Cap-
tain John York jundj out. In 1829
John York carat to Tcxaj with hi»
family, settling near San Felipe de
Austin, at the future site of Industry,
in what i» now Austin County.
First, there was Indian fighting to be
done. Then, there was Texas inde-
pendence to be won. John York led
a company of his neighWs. volunteers,
to San Antonio where he joined Ben
Milam in the historic seige of Bexar.
Home again, he was given a half-
interest in a league of land in the new
Republic of Texas which he had
helped to create. Later he was to do
more for the new State of Texas. In
18-48, for a sale price of just >1 cash,
his land became the site of Yorktown,
in the newly formed county of DeWitt.
in which to watch the settlers and their
families coming in to build his town,
and his dream of the new Texas.
Marauding Indians soon threatened
little Yorktown, and the Captain's
leadership was needed again. He didn t
return from the first retaliatory expe-
dition. Captain York was killed on
October 11, 1848 —a champion ol
freedom to the last.
Today Texans still demand and get
their right to choose the way they want
to live. In this vigorous and freedom-
minded homeland . . "Beer Belongs
and this is why the United Stales Brew-
ers Foundation works constantly, in
conjunction with brewers, wholesalers
and retailers, to assure the sale of beer
and ale under pleasant, orderly condi-
tions. Believing that strict law enforce-
ment serves the best interest of Texans,
the Foundation stresses close co-opera-
tion with the Armed Forces, law en-
forcement and governing officials in
its continuing Self-Regulation program.
But Captain John had only a few weeks

Pain—An Article Of Faith
saints suffer, we cry: 'This must
not be' . . . Our world is evolving
from chaos, savagery and imper-
fection toward some final reali-
zation. The suffering of good peo-
ple has ever been a prime factor
in motivating its rise."
A publishers footnote advises
that Dr. Youngs originally wrote
this explanation for the Layman's
Movement for a Christian World,
Inc., and suggests: "if of interest,
you are invited to visit your near-
by church, where you may find
new joys and answers to many of

"Why Do Good People Suffer?"
Dr. Robert W. Youngs, of the
First Presbyterian Church, Wi-
chita, Kan., writing in the Sep-
tember Reader's Digest, under-
takes to answer "the most time-
less and universal of all questions,
as old as the first tear and as
recent as the latest newscast."
Thin minister notes our readiness
to read a moral lesson into the
early demise of "scoundrels," the
seizure of a gangster by some
dread disease and "advertsity in
the life of an infidel"—and our
confusion in trying to understand
why suffering and death cut down
little children, and misfortune
dogs the lives of the faithful.
The answers, Dr. Youngs as-
sures us, are to be found in the
Bible.
With the words, "He maketh
his sun to rise on the evil and on
the good, and sendeth rain on the
just and the unjust," the Bible re-
minds us, he says, that "God
through nature can be no respec-
ter of persons." In an ordered
world, cause and effect must pre-
vail without reference to virtue
or venality. Still, Dr. Youngs sees
compensation in the fact that
"good people have a faith and
fortitude which makes them mas-
ters of fate and of adversity."
The Bible also shows us, he
says, that good people often suf-
fer because they are lacking in
foresight, realism or industry.
"We can be good as gold, and yet
suffer poverty if we do not work
and save. Very often, good people
suffer because they have no pru-
dence to go with their prayers."
Most important, he thinks, is
the repeated Bibical revelation
that "good people suffer because
suffering is one of the best ways
that God has of bringing out the
best in life . . . Without suffering,
life would be mechanistic and ani-
mal-like, not godlike. A life that
knows at least a little suffering
never grows complacent . .
"If no one but wicked people
suffered," Dr. Youngs points out,
"we would harden our hearts and
say: They deserved it'; but when
