methods. Of course he knew the stranger was approaching;
they had all known the meaning of that
engine out on the sea.
At this moment the man entered. He looked swiftly
from one to another in the room. Steel stepped a
little away from me and the man instantly went close to
him. He pressed a crumpled scrap of paper into Steel's
hand. His fingers closed over it and dropped to his
side.
I pretended not to observe the transfer. The bearer
of the missive went over to Johnson. They spoke in
low tones and walked together into the little side room.
Steel smoothed the paper out with the fingers of
his hand in which he held the message. Guardedly, he
glanced down at it. Evidently the writing was illegible
for he raised his hand and pressed the wrinkles from
the little sheet with the thumbs and forefingers of both
hands. He attempted a casual perusal of the contents
as if they could not be of much importance.
Suddenly his face changed. He clutched the paper
in one hand again and tremblingly lowered it to his side.
His face blanched and became death pallored.
It seemed as if a silent signal of distress went from
one to another around the room. Steel's hand shook as
if palsied. I had never noticed the great paw before,
but now I saw it. The back of it was horrible to look
upon. Heavy scarred seams of flesh marked it. On
three of the fingers the hair grew the wrong way. It
made me shiver. However he was doing enough of
that for both of us. He trembled from head to foot.
His self-control was off duty, for when he tried to
speak, the words stuck in his dry throat.
Whatever the information in the note was, it meant
business, so the sooner I attempted to get away, the
quicker I would know my fate.
