to other towns to continue the search.
In Miami, I met Charles Racken, mayor of the
Canadian town, Ontario. The very day I met him he
had been swindled out of a large sum of money by
three men. I showed him the pictures of Reno Hamlin
and Joe Furey. When he saw Furey's photograph he
exlaimed:
"That's the man who did the job! He's the one
who got my money !"
He gave me the address where Furey had stayed
while engineering the hold-up. I went to the place as
fast as a taxi could get me there. It was a little inconspicuous
bungalow in the middle of a pine forest. An
ideally situated place for Furey to hide out! The landlady's
deafness added to its advantage. She identified
Furey's picture as that of the roomer who had left,
"just yesterday."
I had gone to Miami looking for Spencer as well
as Furey, but now that Joe had left I felt sure if
Spencer had been with him, he, too, would be in other
parts of the country. However I remained for a few
days to do a little digging.
I became friendly with some of the Federal authorities
and from them found out about another "job" the
gang had put over.
A farmer from Illinois had been swindled at Key
West, Florida, by some of the confidence ring. It was
the same old story of the fake stock exchange. The
farmer had started home to obtain more money with
which to operate. On the way, he did some thinking.
Suspicion rose in his mind, so he got off the train at
Miami and notified the Federal authorities. They wired
the farmer's son in Illinois to wire to the crooks in the
father's name, asking for advice as to sending the money
to them instead of bringing it back himself.
Upon the crooks' reply it was hoped to establish
grounds on which to place a Federal charge. The "wise
