caught a switch engine probably bound for Jacksonville!
Tell him Norfleet sent him the word."
How much of my message the man got I do not
know, but he nodded his head, pulled it in and shut the
window.
A little way down the track another engine snorted
and blew off steam. 'We asked the engineer if he could
catch the engine that passed his a minute or two ago.
We explained about the escaped prisoner.
"You bet your life we can catch him!" he exclaimed
enthusiastically.
"Jump on!"
We did and he gave orders to uncouple the two
cars from the locomotive.
He threw the throttle wide open and in another instant
we were thundering down the steel rails. We
swung around the curve and sighted the other engine in
the distance.
"There she is!" cried the engineer, cocking the
throttle way back and giving the great hissing, shrieking
creature a new speed.

rails and ground down the distance between us and the
locomotive ahead.
"We're gaining on 'er!" yelled Pete.
The great boiler trembled and shook. It took deep
hot breaths and let them out with the hiss of Hades. I
could not understand why under the great steam pressure
the throbbing black body did not blow up.
The race kept up for five or six miles with us gaining
on the truants ahead.
The engineer blew several shrill blasts. We were
almost in the railroad yards of Jacksonville.
The locomotive in front of us stopped.
We caught up with it in time to see a policeman
