NORFLEET
Furey had only four thousand dollars in cash at the time.
My God! I didn't know what I was to do. I begged
her to help me think of some way to get the rest. Finally
one of us, I don't recall which, thought of little Mark's
money. My wife had saved nearly everything I had
given her and put it in the bank for the baby.
"But, well-hell! I just had to have that money!
Mrs. Furey went with one of the sheriffs to the school
where the child was. They took him out and drove
to the bank where they inquired the exact saving deposit
of the boy. 'Eight thousand dollars,' said the teller.
"They had the baby sign a check for the entire sum.
Anderson told little Mark to write his name on the line."
Furey paused a moment, caught his under lip between
his teeth and bit into it until a small bead of blood
welled out-then went on"They
returned the kid to school and came back to
Long Beach. I still had to get the balance of eight thousand.
You remained in and around Glendale for several
days and I was kept a close prisoner in the hotel
room, always guarded by either Lips or Anderson. This
was one reason why you never could find them on duty
at my home. Then you went up to San Francisco looking
for me. I told them if I could get to San Francisco
I could get the balance of the money. So they took me
up there. Do you remember the message you received
saying I was registered at the U. S. Grant Hotel in San
Dieo ?"
"Yes !" I exclaimed. "A member of the San Francisco
Police Department read it to me and said he had
been advised by the authorities that you were there and
then he did everything but throw me out of town in an
effort to get me to San Diego."
"Well, I'll tell you, Norfleet," half patronizing, "we
were in San Francisco at the time you got that wire. In
fact, in less than an hour after you left, we occupied the
very room in the hotel you vacated. Fast work, wasn't
it?"
