NORFLEET
She pressed me gently forward to the table. With
her left hand she raised a glass of the liquid to my lips.
"You will have a little drink with me, won't you?"
I drew my head away from the rim.
"No!" I said, "I never drink whiskey. If I should
it would spoil all my fun."
She grasped my arm again and let out a piercing
scream.
Instantly three men sprang, crouched like animals,
into the room through a door at her back.
She darted to the box couch and fell on it in a
heap.
The men closed in on me, one in front, one on each
side. 1 have never looked into a meaner face than the
malicious one opposite me. Shivers went racing up and
down my spine.
"What's all this about?" they demanded.
"No cause for alarm as far as I can see!" I retorted,
forcing a laugh.
My hat still covered my cocked gun. I began slowly
to back toward the wall in the direction of the electric
light button. It was my idea if possible to get a little
more light on the subject.
The men moved one step forward for every one of
mine backward.
The woman lay crouching on the springs watching
our little act with tigerish eyes. The men spoke no
word and in order to fill in the silence I kept laughing
and declaring there was no cause for alarm.
When I got within arm's reach of the button I
stopped. I saw I was up against it for fair.
I could not think what to make of it all. They were
three to my one.
While I was backing toward the wall I saw the
woman lie flat on her back on the bed, toss the whiskey
from the glass over her shoulder on the floor. Then
she suddenly sat up.
She began to smile, and tipping the glass to her
