ability and its consequent scattering of the bunco forces
before his office could get them.
I saw his mental reaction to the situation and I did
my best to relieve his mind as to the possible harm I
would do his organization. I guaranteed that if I could
not serve his office constructively, I would not do so
destructively.
He laid special stress on my not even calling his
office on the telephone. For this emergency he gave me
another number.
As I left the office I wondered what the final outcome
of this one event would be. Strife and combat
were in the air.
I put on my disguise and hit the trail for the postoffice.
The same blind man was tapping the side walk with
his hollow sounding cane. I had seen him there every
time I had been near the building. He was a well
dressed, middle-aged man. He tapped his way but managed
corners and obstructions with surprising ability for
the "sightless" eyes screened by large, dark blue glasses.
An unmistakable gash across his high cheek bone
stamped him as "Bill Mooney" whom I had seen in
Memphis, Tenn., where he was associated with the "confidence"
crew.
I pursued a direct course to the general delivery
window. Rap! Tap! Rap! Tap! came the blind man
behind me.
