NORFLEET
and Robinson searched him and the traveling bag. In
the bag we found evidence that settled their identity.
Davis was Leon Felix, and Miller was Arthur B.
Cooper, or "Artful Artie" as his intimates called him.
Miller never opened his head.
For two hours he sat on the edge of the bed while
we went through all their papers, telegrams and documents.
There were many of the bid slips which bore my
brand put on them when I was in their stock exchange"branch
number four."
When Miller saw that the brand established the
identification of these papers he said nothing but looked
volumes.
Toward noon two of Col. Van Cise's Rangers arrived
in a car and assisted us to get Davis and Miller
into it. While Davis was being allowed to finish his
dressing preparatory to being taken away, young Robinson
remarked to me:
"Norfleet, you've had a hell of a time, haven't you?"
As he exclaimed "Norfleet," Davis jumped about a
foot into the air, let out a yell and keeled over on the
bed in a dead faint.
When we got them all into the big car, I never saw
a happier crowd of men and a sadder pair in my life.
We drove out into the fashionable residence district
on Capitol Hill. The basement of the First Universalist
Church, at the corner of Lafayette and Coffax
Avenue offered the best "safety deposit vault" for the
team and those we hoped to get during the day. When
we put our two into the cement corral, there were already
more than twenty others there. The basement
windows were guarded from the outside and the doors
from the inside.
Before taking the men into the place they had been
relieved of all weapons or substitutes. They were handcuffed,
and as they milled around the big pen they reminded
me of rebellious bulls in a small corral.
