tainly anything which awakens the consciousness to the
relative values is well worth while.
Today the book is balanced.
Norfleet "invested" a total of $75,000 of his own
private funds but in return has the satisfaction that he
not only succeeded in capturing all five of his men but
has done his country many million dollars worth of good.
On the crooks' side their account with Norfleet
shows disaster from the very first.
Taking from him $45,000 compelled them to pay
out $82,900 in "protection" to peace-officers, lawyer fees
and cash bonds forfeited; to say nothing of the indirect
loss from his warning other "prospects" before the
bunco-men could "close."
Financially there was no profit in robbing Norfleet.
Further disasters brought about as a result of
getting the old "Trail Hound" after them include the
death of their leader, Joe Furey; the suicide of Ward;
the incarceration in prison of Gerber, Spencer and Reno
Hamlin, besides some 75 other members of associated
confidence rings.
If this book served only to arouse the public to the
insidious danger lurking for the unwary from this cooperative
organization of criminals, peace-officers and
bankers, it would fail in its purpose.
This danger is so far-reaching that a remedy must
be found.
Many crises in the past have been met and overcome
by educating the people in the methods of prevention.
Since hygiene and physical culture have been taught
in our public schools, America has produced a more intelligent,
healthful and vigorous youth.
In these public schools the lessons in prevention
of crime may be taught easily and constructively.
As hygiene and physical culture develop the body,
so knowledge of the "Power of Thought" will build up
the mind and soul.
